Dec. 1778 starb. Das bezügliche Werk ist betitelt: "Introduction to the theory and practice of physic" (London 1772; 2. ed. Dublin 1776, 2 voll.; lat. Uebers. von J. F. Closs, Utrecht 1774, 2 voll.; Basel 1783; deutsch: Leipzig 1783 (r. 1773); franz. von Petit-Radel, Paris 1787, 2 voll.). Ausserdem veröffentlichte Macbride noch: "Historical account of the new method of treating the scurvy at sea etc.u (London 1778), sowie eine Reihe med. und chemischer Aufsätze in den Med. Observ. and Inquiries und Philosoph. Transact." Pagel An important work, including Macbride's essay "On the Scurvy". The author's "Malt" was one of the main antiscorbutics used on Cook's voyages, although it has since been proved to have little effect. (Medicine & the Navy). Partington, III, p. 143; Biogr. méd. Octavo, two folding tables and four folding plates, modern brown morocco. An important work, including Macbride's essay "On the Scurvy". The author's "Malt" was one of the main antiscorbutics used on Cook's voyages, although it has since been proved to have little effect. Macbride is best remembered for this work on scurvy, which extends the theoretical work of John Pringle. Macbride argued that the disease was related to the loss of fixed air (carbon dioxide). As a cheap and accessible source of fixed air, he recommended the use of infusions of malt - "worts" - taken from the liquid remaining when malt is suspended in water. The solution was tested with some apparent success by his brother Admiral John Macbride on HMS Jason and, despite less tangible results on the voyages of Wallis and Carteret, Macbride's Malt was one of the main treatments taken with Cook on the Endeavour. Cook was so taken with the Malt that he continued to use and value it during his second voyage, leading Lloyd and Coulter to comment that 'contrary to general belief. Cook's voyages delayed rather than hastened the introduction of the true cure of scurvy' (Medicine & the Navy). David Macbride (1726-1778), a chemist and physician, entered the Royal Navy after an apprenticeship with a civilian surgeon. He served as mate aboard a hospital ship and then surgeon during the war of Austrian succession (1741-1748). His seafaring experience enabled him to make a careful study of scurvy, and was the catalyst for his lifelong search for an effective antiscorbutic. After leaving the navy he set up as a surgeon and accoucheur in 1752, 'but bashfulness limited his practice for several years' (DNB). This is the third and final edition of a work first published in 1764. All editions are now quite rare. . Slight water-staining, especially to final pages, neat library stamps to title and plates.

8vo, pp. xiv, (ii), 296, 2 folding letterpress tables and 4 engraved plates (1 folding). Contemporary calf, spine ruled in gilt with red morocco label (neat repairs to spine, one lower corner a little worn). Some gatherings slightly browned, as in other copies seen. Armorial bookplate of Matthew Waters. Second London edition. The Irishman David Macbride studied in Glasgow and became a naval surgeon. His principal subject of investigation in this series of five essays was fixed air (carbon dioxide). Of particular interest is the essay on scurvy, which Macbride considered to be due to a lack of fixed air, and of vegetables rich in fixed air. He therefore recommended fresh vegetables as a cure for scurvy, or for longer voyages, an infusion of malt that he called the wort. Macbride?s experimental results also sparked Joseph Priestley?s interest in the medicinal possibilities of the new gases he was discovering, and this research led to the work of Thomas Beddoes and the Pneumatic Institute. At the end of this edition is a 10-page Postscript detailing how the wort cured scurvy on the Royal Naval ship Jason, commanded by MacBride?s brother. The Admiralty ordered that the wort should be given further trial, and sent copies of this edition of the book to Captain Cook, who took them on his first voyage in 1768. Heeding Macbride?s advice, Cook took every opportunity to obtain fresh supplies, and never lost a man to scurvy, a quite extraordinary feat at the time. The first edition, without the important postscript, was published in London in 1764, and this second edition was also published in Dublin earlier in the same year.
