The 4th volume of the "Historical and Critical Dictionary", a famous philosophical dictionary by Pierre Bayle, one of the most important philosophers of the 17th century and a precursor of Enlightenment. The dictionary itself is followed by several short treatises and critical remarks on Moréri's dictionary. This 5th edition by P. des Maizeaux is considered the best. The title page features a copper engraving by Ian/Jan Schenk (1698-1752), an Amsterdam engraver. Pages are decorated with initials. /// Leather binding with raised bands, gilt ornament, coloured edges and endpapers; hardback, [2]+804 pp., 2° (27 x 39.5 cm), leather slightly worn, with small rubbing marks, gilt title and ornament slightly effaced, endpapers slightly rubbed, front free endpaper has very old signature written with pen, some final leaves slightly have a pale water stain on their bottom right corner, some pages yellowed, condition: very good Book Language/s: French.

Scarce collection which contains among other correspondences, the correspondence of Leibnitz and A.S.
