Major had a long career at the British Museum, serving from 1867 as keeper of the newly created department of printed maps and plans. He edited numerous works for the Hakluyt Society, also serving as its secretary, and was secretary and vice-president of the Royal Geographical Society. In his enclosed letter to Grant, Major writes: 'I cannot tell you what a real pleasure it is to an overweening fellow like me, who have an affection for a book that cost me six years of hard research, to find that I have two large paper copies left, and that you will kindly do me the honour of accepting one of them . primarily it speaks of that great series of discoveries instituted by him [Prince Henry], which opened up our knowledge of the great continent with which your own name is undyingly connected .'While Grant was not with Speke when he identified the source of the Nile at Ripon Falls, Lake Victoria, he shared in the fame which resulted from the expedition, receiving the gold medal of the RGS in 1864. His written and visual records of east Africa preserved at the National Library of Scotland are truly remarkable. Borba de Moraes (1983), p. 510; Sabin, 44069.

Octavo, 114pp., plus additional single leaf promoting the Société, old quarter roan. Presentation copy, inscribed and signed by the author: a thorough examination of Richard Henry Major's Life of Henry the Navigator by a member of the Société de Géographie. Major is remembered as a pioneering revisionist voyage historian who challenged conventional notions on the first discovery of Australia. Major championed the Portuguese claim throughout his career, and enjoyed privileged access to rare manuscript and cartographic materials as an employee of the British Museum and secretary of the Hakluyt Society. Major's linguistic skill allowed him to study and interpret first-hand archaic and difficult material beyond the grasp of his contemporaries. And in 1861 Major was honoured by Pedro V of Portugal and made a knight of the Tower and the Sword. Although many of Major's beliefs are now not widely held (and his interpretation of the Dieppe maps has been vigorously challenged), his publications reinvigorated interest in the early voyages and stimulated debate upon in the maritime discovery of Australia before Cook. . Very good in old quarter roan (a bit scuffed), from the reference library of publisher Hachette with a few stamps.
