Wissenschaftliche Edition des im 1. Jahrhundert n. Chr. entstandenen Lehrgedichts über das astronomische Wissen seiner Zeit. Es überlebte in zwei Handschriften, die zuerst von Poggio Bracciolini während des Konstanzer Konzils entdeckt u. 1473 zuerst in Nürnberg gedruckt wurde. - Wie praktisch alle im Handel angebotenen Exemplare handelt es sich wohl um einen fotomechanischen, vermutlich nach Übernahme des Verlags Reimer durch de Gruyter (1919), entstandenen Neudruck.

Marcus Manilius, who lived in the reigns of Augustus and Tiberius, is the author of the earliest treatise on astrology we possess. His Astronomica, a Latin didactic poem in five books, begins with an account of celestial phenomena, and then proceeds to treat the signs of the zodiac and the twelve temples; there follow instructions for calculating the horoscoping degree, the details of the chronocrators, decans, injurious degrees, zodiacal geography, paranatellonata, and other technical matters. In spite of its undoubted elegance, the Astronomica is a difficult work, and this edition provides in addition to the first English prose translation a full guide to the poem, with copious explanatory notes and illustrative figures.

Les Astronomiques est devenu un grand classique dans l'étude de la science des astres chez les Anciens.Le premier livre traite de la sphère céleste, des premiers auteurs de l'astronomie et des progrès des sciences humaines, des opinions des philosophes, des éléments de la terre, du ciel et des astres, des signes du zodiaque et des constellations extrazodiacales.Les second, troisième et quatrième livres sont désignés comme Isagogiques, c'est-à-dire, introducteurs ou préparatoires, parce qu'ils contiennent les définitions des différents sujets traités par Homère, Hésiode et d'autres poètes.Le cinquième livre contient une énumération des constellations extra-zodiacales et des degrés des douze signes avec lesquels elles se lèvent.Tels sont donc les objets traités par Manilius dans les cinq livres de ses Astronomiques.
