[8], XL, 225, [7]; [6], XVI, 322, [4]; [12], XL, 248, [2]; [4], 397, [3] pp.First edition of a very extensive work on fortification, by the French military engineer Marc-René, marquis de Montalembert (1714-1800). "Viewing fortresses as nothing more than immense permanent batteries designed to pour overwhelming fire on attacking armies, Montalembert simplified the intricate geometric designs of Vauban and relied on simple polygonal structures, often with detached peripheral forts instead of projecting bastions. The fortifications at Anklam, Stralsund, Aix-en-Provence, and Île d'Oléron were among his most prominent creations." (Encyclopaedia Brittanica). The first volume is devoted to the origins and progress of fortification, the others to the usefulness, construction, attack, defence and other aspects of fortresses. A fifth volume with 17 folding plates, added in 1784, is not included in the present set, which was probably issued before it appeared. With several library- and deaccession stamps. Occasionally some minor foxing and some marginal (water) stains. Some plates slightly browned and a few with frayed edges. Overall in very good condition and with wide margins. Bindings somewhat rubbed, some tiny wormholes, but still firm and good.l Encyclopaedia Brittanica, Marc-René, marquis de Montalembert (online); Jähns, p. 1863; Jordan 2561; Sloos, Warfare 08168.

Par Plusieurs Officers du Royal Corps du Génie. 4to. Sixteen folding plates. Some light browning, otherwise very good in contemporary cat's-paw calf, raised bands to the spine, spine gilt in compartments, upper joint starting towards the tail, but sound, head- and tail-caps chipped, but overall an attractive copy. [iv], 290pp. ? publisher's catalogue Fourcroy, a man described by Duffy as ? dull, ambitious and inexhaustible.?, succeeded in having himself made Supreme Engineer of France in 1776 despite ? never in his life [having] directed a siege or large-scale construction.? Piqued by Montalembert's publication of La Fortification Perpendiculaire and following a demonstration of the efficacy of the massively armed fortresses described therein - at the Isle de Aix in 1781 - Fourcroy recruited ? the long-retired Major Grenier and the young officer de Frescheville.? to compile the present work as a refutation. Others joined the fray and by the time of d'Arçon's publication of Considérations Militaires et Politiques sur les Fortifications in 1795 the battle was over, Montalembert defeated, and ?The triumph of engineering conservatism in France?, as Duffy describes it, was complete. [See Duffy The Fortress in the Age of Vauban and Frederick the Great, 1660-1789 pp.153-163 for a description of this debate: ?The Crisis of Permanent Fortification.?]. An attractive copy of an uncommon item, later armorial bookplate of William Ferrand to the front pastedown.

Four pages, 12mo, very good condition. His correspondent's letter eventually reached him in Paris where he'd resided since the last August "in coinsequence of my son-in-law the Baron de Montalembert being appointed by the French Government Minister at the Court of Wurtemberg [.] but political reasons, and the difficulty of procuring a suitable house in that small capital have hitherto prevented our joining him." His daughter has to go through a "Municipal marriage" under the Napoleonic Code to establish her children's legitimacy. They plan to return to Stuttgart for a time then return down the Rhine with his grandson to Brussels, and then to England. "I shall then make you one of my earliest calls at the [British] Museum when I trust I shall find you well - illness and the sad state of my daughter's health [.] prevented my visiting any of my friends, except the day that I did [underlined twice] call on Mr Planta, yourself & Mr Combe [.] In the meantime have the goodness to add my name to the list of your subscribers for 2 copies of your interesting work of [sic] the ruins of Babylon - I fear I have no way of sending the amount from here - I assure you I am always happy to have the pleasure of seeing or hearing from you - & particularly wished it during the publication of the Oriental Memoirs - but you were tehn generally out of town, & I believe not in good health [.]" Note: Claudius Rich, Author of: 'Memoir on the Ruins of Babylon' ('Mines de l'Orient', reprinted London 1815); 'Second memoir on the ruins' (London 1818).
