Marshall together with South Australian pathologist, Robin Warren, showed that the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) plays a major role in causing many conditions of peptic ulcers, challenging decades of medical doctrine. Barry Marshall and Robin Warren were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in recognition of their 1982 discovery.
