8vo. (21 x 12.5 cm). pp. iv + 445 + adverts [1]. Contemporary full calf, gilt ruled spine, black morocco label with gilt lettering. Contemporary ink inscription to f.f.e.p. Author's name in ms. to title. Upper joint cracked, spine rubbed. 'Thomas James Mathias (1753/4-1835) was an accomplished satirist and Italian scholar chiefly known for his satire The Pursuits of Literature, or, What You Will. Published in four dialogues from 1794-1797, the work was in part a response to the French Revolution and prevalence of democratic radicalism. Despite criticism of his lack of poetic skill, his satire of contemporary figures made it an incredibly popular work.' (Wikipedia).

Ancora dottorando compose Runic Odes, poi nel 1783 scrisse la dissertazione An Essay on the evidence external and internal, relating to the poems attributed to Thomas Rowley.

Contemp. speckled calf, gilt rules and motifs to spine, maroon label. Very slight weakening at head of leading hinge. A v.g., attractive copy. ESTC T61577. On the leading free endpaper is a pencil note indicating that this volume was purchased from James Lackington in 1809 together with a coded price. An additional ink note on the leading free endpaper dated Jan. 5th 1809, possibly by Lackington, suggesting it is 'unique' for containing the Preface to L. B--- Esq., the translated citations and the 68pp. index added to this edition. The ultra-conservative Mathias published the first part of his anti-Jacobin response to the revolutionary controversy in 1794. He captured the polarised opinion of the public at this time with his anonymous satire on his literary contemporaries, to which he added copious, erudite, and very lengthy footnotes; George Steevens later remarking that the poem was merely 'a peg to hang the notes on.' He published three further dialogues (all are included here), preserving his anonymity to help fuel the public's interest. His satire denounced Richard Payne Knight, and in Part IV went on to compare The Monk to Cleland's Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure; continuing on from Coleridge's critical review of 1797. Mathias was answered by Thomas Dutton's The Literary Census (1798), and an anonymous vindication of The Monk, entitled Impartial Strictures (1798). 'Wit and learning may be found in every page.' Joseph Hunter. 'The malevolence of Gifford without the wit.' Robert Southey. 'One of the cleverest books I ever met with.' Elizabeth Smith. The Pursuits of Literature proved very popular; the last edition was the 16th of 1812.

Erstausgabe
FIRST COLLECTED EDITION, 8vo, pp. [iv], 2, [ii], xvii-xxxi, [i], xvi, 381, [1]. The first two gatherings of the preface bound in reverse order. [Bound with:] A Translation of the passages from Greek, Latin, Italian, and French Writers, quoted in the Prefaces and Notes to the Pursuits of Literature; a poem, in four dialogues. Dublin: Printed for J. Milliken, 32, Grafton-Street. 1799. 8vo, pp. [iv], lxxv, [v], 104. Contemporary half vellum, marbled boards, black morocco label. One leaf with a closed tear through text (no loss), otherwise some light spotting, a faint dampmark to second work. Binding a bit rubbed, a few small stains. Armorial bookplates of Francis White Popham and William Bisset to front endpapers, ownership inscription of Bisset dated 1798 to title-page, small ink name to second flyleaf. The first collected edition of this ?wide-ranging satire with extensive notes on the conceit and licence of contemporary authors? (ODNB), first published in its separate parts from 1796 to 1797. (Some of the individual parts had reached their own fourth editions by then, hence the edition statement here.) ?The attacks on Payne Knight's Worship of Priapus and Lewis's The Monk are concerned with obscenity, and Mathias ridicules the 'Black-Letter Kennell' of antiquarians (especially George Steevens), W. H. Ireland, Parr, Darwin, and Gilpin, on literary grounds. There is praise for Gray, Mason, Beattie, Burns, Cowper, Ann Radcliffe, Capell, Johnson, Isaac Reed, and Jacob Bryant, as well as for several of Mathias's own works? (ODNB). Bound with it is a further work by Mathias himself, offering translations of the passages in the original, appearing in a rare version: ESTC locates this Dublin printing in just half a dozen locations, with only the BL and Huntington outside of Ireland. It was also issued with a Dublin printing of the main work, though evidently also sold separately. ESTC T131292; T124734.
Zustand: Fair. Acceptable condition. Reading copy only. Lacking front board. First and last few pages and rear board detached, but present. Slightly dampstained. In polypropylene bag. (literature, poems, poetry).
