Erstausgabe
First and only contemporary edition of this attractive publication, a thorough study of the region covered by the terms of the Anglo-Turkish Convention, a defensive pact which was signed in the aftermath of Ottoman defeat in the Russo-Turkish War (1877-78), and also established Britain's lease on Cyprus. The book is uncommon on the market, just a single copy at auction in the last 25 years. McCoan set out to offer a "concise but comprehensive sketch" (Preface) of Turkey's Asiatic Empire, an effort in which the ethnologist and linguist A. H. Keane reviewing in Nature judged him to have been entirely successful, "Within the compass of two moderately-sized octavo volumes it deals with an immense variety of topics. Yet such is its admirable arrangement, and so thoroughly master is the writer of his subject, that there is nowhere any crowding or confusion, and the result is a most convenient and reliable handbook. Nothing is omitted that comes fairly within the scope of such a treatise, and a twenty years' personal experience of an intelligent observer of men and things will be sufficient guarantee of the accuracy of his statements. In the first volume separate chapters are devoted to each of the five great divisions of Asiatic Turkey, whose orography, hydrography, climate, natural products, present economical conditions, trade routes, political divisions, are treated in detail. These are followed by more comprehensive chapters on the history, races, religions, resources, and government of this eastern section of the empire. The second volume is occupied chiefly with questions of an economical and social characterpublic works, public instruction, trade centres, agriculture, slavery, polygamy, the Ulema, the capitulations, abuses, necessary reforms". McCoan (1829-1904) was an Irish-born barrister, journalist and politician. Having been called to the bar in 1856, he turned to journalism, acting as The Daily News' war correspondent at the Crimean War. At the end of the conflict he travelled through Georgia and Circassia before settling in Contantinople where he " practised in the supreme consular court in Constantinople until 1864, and founded and edited the first English-language newspaper in Turkey, the Levant Herald. The paper was for a time subsidized by the British government, until in 1870 McCoan disposed of itapparently under pressure from the Turkish authoritiesand returned to England" (ODNB). Subsequently he wrote number of books, including the present, based on his experiences and knowledge of Egypt and Turkey, and had a slightly chequered political career as a Protestant Home Ruler. A. H. Keane, "Our New Protectorate", in Nature 20, 11 September 1879. Two volumes octavo. Original moderate olive green cloth by Bone & Son, Fleet Street - tickets to back pastedowns - lettered in gilt on the spines, concentric panels in black to the boards, large gilt device of crossed British and Turkish flags above a rising sun to front boards, light greenish yellow surface paper endpapers. Small bookseller's ticket of Gustav E. Stechert, Broadway, NY to front pastedown volume 1. Large coloured folding map to volume 1. Ex-Gardner A. Sage Library, New Brunswick Theological Seminary, their slightly obtrusive ink accession and deaccession stamps to the title pages, small inked press marks to the front pastedowns, strip of gum residue to rear free endpapers from lifting of issue slips, but otherwise unmarked, slightest cracking of the endpapers at the inner hinges, short closed tear to the map, but in all other respects a sharp and bright copy, very good.
