Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. iv, 972 p. 22 cm. Frontispiece portrait of author. About 170 b&w illustrations throughtout the text. 10 coloured plates illustrating flowers. Half leather with paper boards. Scuffed boards and worn edges and corners.Ink inscription on front free endpaper. First pages rough, soiled, thumbed, and frontispiece coming loose. Spotting and soiling throughout. Paper darkened. Title continues: "Exhibiting the Latest and Most Approved Management of Kitchen, Fruit, and Flower Gardens, the Green-House, Hot-House, Conservatory, &c. &c. For Every Month in the Year." Charles McIntosh was born at Abercairney in Perthshire where his father, John, was head gardener. Little Charles succeeded his father in this position, before taking on positions as gardener in other British country houses. McIntosh's skill brought him to the attention of Prince Leopold, later King of the Belgians, and for 10 years McIntosh made great improvements to the grounds next to the royal residence of Claremont House, Surrey. Leopold later took McIntosh to Belgium where he remodelled the gardens at Laeken. In 1838 McIntosh returned to Scotland to undertake his greatest role, that of head gardener to the immensely wealthy Duke of Buccleuch. McIntosh updated the Duke's gardens at Dalkeith, introducing the productive hothouses that were amongst the most extensive in the UK. Scattered botanical bits within the leaves testify to this book's actual use by a long-ago horticulturalist.

"In 1829 M'Intosh was offered and accepted the post of gardener to Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg at Claremont, Esher, Surrey. He later accompanied Leopold when he became sovereign to Greece and subsequently to Brussels when Leopold became king of Belgium. M'Intosh spent seven years between Claremont and Brussels, spending three to nine months at each place at any one time. He built the range of hothouses at Lechan, altered much of the grounds, and laid out a new kitchen garden. He travelled over a large part of Belgium, reporting on the progress of horticulture and agriculture, having carte blanche to visit every establishment in the kingdom. M'Intosh became known to Princess Victoria while he was at Claremont. He also showed the grounds to Prince Albert on his first arrival in England. While at Claremont, M'Intosh wrote Flora and Pomona (1829-31, with coloured illustrations of fruits and flowers) but his frequent visits to Belgium interfered so much with that work that he gave up the book when he had only completed one volume."
