Printed in black ink on a 9 x 16.5 cm. piece of paper. A scarce piece of ephemera. Grubby, aged and worn. Laid down on part of a page from an album. A pastiche of a Georgian banknote, the main body of the text reading: 'No. 24 . . . . | Promise to pay to Ignorance, Hypocrisy & Fanaticism, Methodist Preachers, or Bearer FIVE Farthings, when Methodism shall have been done away with by the Pious exertions of the established Clergy, and when Iohn Bull's Family shall be no longer scared by the tale of the Devil let loose. | London the 1st. day of Septr 1810. | For Self, Be-just & Fear-not | Moral Rectitude.' In the margin to the left is a vignette of a methodist minister preaching, in circular border with words: 'I give ye this consolation You'll all be Damn'd'. Beneath the vignette are Luffman's details. Above the engraving is a four-line arrangement of a couplet by Pope: 'For modes of Faith | Let fiery Zealots fight, | He can't be wrong, |whose life is in the right.' Beneath the vignette are the following four lines: 'Mind not one word | Such stupid fellows say. | Fear the true GOD | and mend your sinful way.' Part of a series by Luffman. The British Museum has (from the collection of Edwared Hawkins) a copy of No.16, promising to pay 'to Spouter, Swearlie & Promptspeech, Affidavit Makers, or Bearer, Two Pence, when Coughing, Sneezing or the Bowel-easing Flatus', dated from London, 5 December 1809. Dorothy George has, as No. 11780 in her 'Catalogue of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum', a reissue of this item by S. W. Fores of Piccadilly, but does not have a copy of this original.

Four pages, 4to, creased but good condition. Thanks for a letter. He differs with his correspondent on the "postponing the projected Memoir of Dr Clarke [published 1843-9]. I think it should have appeared 2 or 3 years ago and taken precedence of Dan[ie]l Isaacs. With Dawson's life you are prompt [published 1842] and the publishers will find the advantage in an extensive sale. Every one who has seen him in the Pulpit or heard him from the Platform are desirous to refresh their memory with an outline of his extraordinary character" but postponement of publication would mean loss of public interest. "Not so in Dr Clarke he must live from generation to generation but a 'conversational life' should be for his cotemporaries who are now rapidly passing away. | I think [Thomas] Jackson has murdered his own Work by cutting it into slips for the Magazine and reduced it into shilling parts. Surely a connexion like ours would have taken off the whole 1500 copies of Charles Wesley's Life [.promoting a review in the Magazine]". He then quotes a "MS. Letter Dated Wakefield 27 Sep. 1791" written by William Thompson at length about his life of Whitehead and the effects of publishing it in the Magazine. He goes on to discuss the unsatisfactory "state of our Funds" and mentions the resignation of a "Mr Farmer", Treasurer. He cuts short his letter because of a visit (found among his "books and papers"), but adds a closely written full page of notes on Everett's work on Dr Clarke. Note: Marriott bequeathed £10,000 to the Wesleyan Missionary Society (obit. in Wesleyan Methodist Magazine, vol.75, p.103 (1852)).

Manuskript / Papierantiquität
The three items in fair condition, lightly aged and worn. ONE: ALS [to Bartelot] from 'J. Crosland'. (There are postcards printed by 'J. Crosland and Son, Post Office, Sutton Bridge Wisbech.') 3pp., 12mo. He begins with reference to a Wesley letter which 'has been in the family about 50 years more rather than less the family has been connected with Methodism almost from the days of Wesley himself without a break.' He also discusses 'a statue in white (parian marble) I think it is standing 6 ½ in high (Base on which he stands 1 in) in full clerical robe with open book in left hand & the right hand uplifted evidently in the act of addressing the people or preaching.' This has been 'in the family 3 generations at least'. TWO: ALS to Bartelot from Rev. J. S. Simon. 2pp., 4to. He is 'interested in John Wesley's pedigree' and has been in correspondence with 'Mr. Broadley of Bridport', who suggested he should write. He asks for elucidation regarding 'Calamy's statement', going into detail on the question of Wesley's wife's uncle Thomas Fuller. He requests 'light on the subject of the marriage and death of John Westley, and on the place of his burial'. THREE: Printed handbill in light blue and red, headed: 'The Liverpool Wesleyan Methodist Council. | BI-CENTENARY OF WESLEY'S BIRTH, | 1703 JUNE 17th 1903. | PROGRAMME'. 1p., 8vo. Includes an organ recital by Dr A. L. Peace, and contributions by seven clergymen: Joseph Jackson, T. J. Choate, E. T. Carrier, T. Hughes, Owen Roberts, H. J. Taylor and Robert Killip. No other copy traced, either on OCLC WorldCat, or on COPAC.
