Erstausgabe
Cloth. Zustand: Very Good. Not Stated (illustrator). First edition. The very scarce first edition of this genealogical work, with a wonderful association, being presented to John Montagu, the Earl of Sandwich, a relative of those discussed in this work. The first edition of this very scarce work, in which Richard Montague provides an account of the American Montague family's meeting in Massachusetts, to commemorate the birth of their first American ancestor in 1602. Presented by another American Montague, named George William Montague, to John Montagu, 7th Earl of Sandwich, a member of the English branch of the family, and a British peer and Conservative politician.George William's letter, written in 1883, explains that 'I have taken the liberty to forward to your address by this mail a copy of the Report of the "Montague Family at Hadley, Mass" at their meeting'. He explains 'it was voted at that family gathering that a genealogical record of the American family be prepared and a committee was appointed for the purpose'.They ask Sandwich for further information about the British branch of the family, stating 'we have taken perhaps an unwarranted liberty in addressing your Lordship upon this subject, which can possess but little, if any, interest to you', and asks that this letter be passed to anyone with further information.A second loosely inserted letter is addressed far less formally to 'my dear Sandwich', and sent in 1885, states that 'when I was in America last year I was invited to the family meeting of the American Montague's (as they write it) but I did not attend it. I was also asked for information which I could not give, for I know nothing of the patriarchs to whom they refer'. The letter is signed 'Manchester'.With a number of ink notations throughout the text, in the hand of George William Montague.Illustrated with a frontispiece, and one further plate. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to spine head and tail, otherwise externally excellent, with light fading to back strip. Front hinge strained, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with some light spotting to the start of the work. A small number of pages feature the ink notations of a prior owner. Very Good. book.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION. Folio. pp. [iv], 307, [i], 313-552. [A]², B-2C⁶, 2D⁴, 2E-3A⁶ Roman letter, some Italic and Greek. Title within double line rule, small woodcut printer s device, historiated and floriated woodcut initials, woodcut head and tail-pieces, C18 autograph Ro Britiffe at head of title. Light age yellowing, margins of title browned, rare marginal spot of mark. A very good copy crisp and clean in contemporary calf, covers bordered with a double blind rule, spine with raised bands blind ruled in compartments, gilt armorial device of Harbord Harbord, 1st Baron Suffield in one compartment, a.e.r. head and tail, joints and corners worn, lacking label. First edition, published posthumously, a year after the author s death, this controversial work intended to help mend the schism between the Church of England and the Vatican by the celebrated anglican Bishop Montague. Richard Montague was educated at Eton and Cambridge, became chaplain to James I, Bishop of Chichester in 1628 and of Norwich in 1638. He disliked the extremes of both Calvinism and Romanism, a position which did little to ingratiate him with either group. In the present work Montagu examines Jewish doctrine and practices before the birth of Jesus, and their implications for Christianity; in doing so he argues against Casaubon, Scaliger, and other Protestant scholars, while defending the Catholic Baronius and his Annales Ecclesiastici. The importance of Foxe s history of martyrdom in the struggle for the identity of the English Church is confirmed by the fact the Bishop of Norwich Richard Montagu, ., published posthumously his own volume of Acts and Monuments in 1642, when the argument in England was almost lost, for the next eighteen years at least. The difference between his view of the Church and that propounded in the Song of Songs is shown in the full title for the work: The acts and monuments of the church before Christ Incarnate. The very idea that the church could exist before the coming of Christ was anathema to those who believed that the Church was His Bride : Montagu argued that there always had been a visible church in existence, that the Synagogue was indistinguishable from the Church, that good works were acceptable to God even in Pagans. Nothing could be more objectionable to those who believed in the predestinating love of God singled the Church out from the rest of corrupt humanity, protected her and gave her privileges and especial favours which demanded complete devotion and spiritual-mindedness in return. Elizabeth Clarke Politics, Religion and the Song of Songs in Seventeenth-Century England. For the first time, some writers expressed a general distaste for the religious controversy per se, in terms which included the Roman Church. Richard Montagu [in the Acts and Monuments] contrasted the mildness and brotherly love exhibited by the fathers of the early church, despite their differences of opinion, with the temper of these days of gall and wormwood , in which all was perverted by private interests and opinions. It is mens delight , he observed, to engarboyle the Church upon high termes of Heresie, Recusancie, Separation, most commonly for points of that nature and assise, which no way advance or impeach salvation. The needless controversies of our contentious times led to a more general neglect and contempt of the Truth . Anthony Milton. Catholic and Reformed: The Roman and Protestant Churches in English. From the library of Harbord Harbord, (armorial device gilt on spine) 1st Baron Suffield (1734 1810), a British landowner and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1756 to 1784 when he was raised to the peerage as Baron Suffield. The book came to him through his wife s family; his wife Elizabeth Britiffe, was daughter of Robert Britiffe, Recorder of Norwich. (autograph at head of title). His younger son Edward was a radical politician and anti-slavery campaigner. ESTC R3327. Wing M2469. Lowndes IV 1588.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 4to. pp. [xxviii], 322, [iv]. [pi², a , * , A-2S , 2T².] First and last leaf blank. Roman letter, ornate woodcut headpieces and borders, magnificent first initial, engraved armorial bookplate of the Inner library bequeathed by the will of Tho. Eyre Esq. with the names of the executors and dated 1792. T-p a little dusty. A very good copy, crisp and clean, with excellent margins, stab bound in contemporary limp vellum, remains of ties, spine with loss of vellum in lower half, a little soiled. One of the most famous works of the age of controversial doctrinal writing, by Montague (1577-1641) Bishop of Chichester, who devoted his not inconsiderable learning to apologetics for the Anglican Church, attempting to prove it not only part of, but the true part of, the universal Church. This drew him into conflict with the powerful Puritan faction, two of whose number from Ipswich, Yates and Ward, referred one of his publications to Archbishop Abbot as papistical . The present work (licensed by the Dean of Carlisle after Abbot s refusal) constitutes a rebuttal of that charge and vindicates Montague s teaching from Arminianism and Popery alike. It caused an uproar. He was accused by the Commons i.a. of treating Church and Parliament with contempt, and committed to the custody of the serjeant-at-arms. The King showed his views by appointing Montague one of his chaplains. Richard Montague was educated at Eton and Cambridge, became chaplain to James I, Bishop of Chichester in 1628 and of Norwich in 1638. He disliked the extremes of both Calvinism and Romanism, a position which did little to ingratiate him with either group: he became embroiled in a bitter rhetorical exchange with the Catholic theologian Matthew Kellison (c.1560-1642), and the publication of many of his works incensed Puritans, who appealed to the House of Commons. Though Montague was by no means polite to his Papist opponent, sneering at him as this Gagger , he ventured to express a moderate view on the vexed subject of Antichrist with a glance at some who were not so moderate. . Some of the Calvinist party were not slow in recognising themselves in these words or in answering for themselves against Montague. They were, in particular Samuel Ward and John Yates (both of Cambridge), who did not hesitate (as he complained) to traduce him to the world for a Papist and an Arminian DNB. In the following January the work was examined and passed by a special conference of Bishops, but the Commons voted a petition that the author be punished and the book burned. In the end a truly Anglican compromise was reached; a proclamation was issued suppressing the Appello Caesarem , and its author was granted a special pardon. A very good unsophisticated copy of this important work of Anglican history. ESTC S112822. STC 18030. STC 18031. Lowndes 1588.
