From its first publication it was the most popular English dictionary, until the publication of Johnson's formidable dictionary in 1755.Bailey's 'Dictionary' was one of the first English dictionaries to focus on defining words of common usage, as well as some lesser known, more obscure words.One leaf of adverts to the rear.Register runs as: A2-A4, a4, B-3I4, 3K1, 3K4-6A4.Bound without the title page, the first leaf being A2. Also bound without leaves 3K2 and 3K3. In a full calf binding. Externally, front board is detached but present, rear board held by cords only. Loss of leather to the spine, and to the front board. Bumping to the extremities. Some rubbing and marks, and a little discolouration to the boards and spine. Surface cracks to the spine. Ink notes to the front paste down. Lacking the endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with the occasional spot and handling mark. Lacking the title page, and leaves 3K2 and 3K3. Small tide mark to the tail of the final few pages. Leaves a2 and a3 of the introduction are detaching. The occasional ink note to the text. Good Only. book.

Orrery plate epicting Caesar swimming has been removed, glued to front pastedown with inscription. "Assisted in the Mathematical Part by G. Gordon; in the Botanical by P. Miller; and in the Etymological, &c. by T. Lediard, Gent. Professor of the Modern Languages in Lower Germany." Bailey (d. 1742) lexicographer, kept a boarding school at Stepney. Thirty editions of this dictionary appeared, the latest at Glasgow in 1802, and it was reprinted by various booksellers. Lord Chatham is said to have read it through twice, and Chatterton obtained many sham-antique words from Bailey. Johnson is said to have made this dictionary the foundation of his own. 2nd edition, with numerous Additions and Improvements.

A household manual covering everything from basic recipes, to cures for diseases, to animal husbandry, written by lexicographer Nathan Bailey (c.1691-1742), whose work was an influence on Samuel Johnson. There are substantial entries on brewing and fermenting, raising and preparing chicken, suggestions for abortifacients, cheese making (Cheshire, Gloustershire, cheddar, Stilton, and more), ?catchup that will keep good 20 years?, and mince pies, among much else. In a contemporary panelled calf binding with a 'I' to the spine, implying that this work was once bound alongside the separate supplementary volume which was first issued in 1727. Noted for including a recipe for fried chicken among brewing instructions, this is a very scarce insight to eighteenth century cookery. In a lovely 20th century panelled calf, imitation binding. The first edition of this work. ESTC no. T86942. Nathan Bailey was a noted philologist and lexicographer. He is best remembered for a variety of Dictionaries he penned such as his 'Universal Etymological Dictionary' and his 'Dictionarium Britannicum'. A handy guide to all aspects of domestic life in eighteenth century England. This work is displayed in dictionary form, from A-Z and covers brewing, baking, pickling, organising pantries, caring for animals, vineyards, breeding bees and using plants and herbs for medicinal purposes. Individual recipes and instructions include bleaching clothes, chocolate meringues, salting ham, cheese making, gingerbread and much more. The marinade found to Cc1v for chicken has recently been revived by modern cooks and has been hailed as a successful and tasty recipe for fried chicken. A well-preserved, very smart copy of this historical source. Rebound, in a full calf binding. Externally, in a lovely condition with just some minor shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Contemporary inscriptions to the reverse of the frontispiece and to the rear endpaper. Minor chips to the extremities of the title page. Pages are closely cropped in places to the top edge, almost affecting the running title. Very small amount of worming to the bottom margin of gatherings I-L. Pages are generally bright with just the odd spot, mostly to the first and last few pages. Very Good Indeed. book.
