Hand colored lithograph. Image measures 10 1/2" x 14 1/2". This print was published in the 1836 Spanish edition of Carl Nebel's "Viaje Pintoresco y Arqueolojico sobre la Parte mas Interesante de la Republica Mejicana", or "Picturesque and Archaeological Journey through Mexico". Lithographed after an original painting by Nebel made during his travels, the image depicts a street scene with two women and a man gathered in a plaza. The women are of Spanish ancestry, wearing mantillas, traditional lace veils, and holding abanicos, or Spanish hand fans. The man wears a large cloak and a brimmed hat. This print is in good condition, with signficant toning throughout. Wide margins as issued, Carl Nebel (1805-1855) was a German architect, engineer, and draughtsman. After living in Mexico from 1829-1834, he published this renowned illustrative work including 50 lithographs, of which 20 were hand colored; and an introduction written by Alexander Humboldt. Following the success of his first work, Nebel continued to produce and publish images of Mexico, most notably illustrating the Mexican-American War.
