Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 268-286. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - "=BCT 1989 (1992) no. 34" handwritten on cover, otherwise good and very clean. - From the text: Although he could never be construed as a scholastic, there was probably no philosopher of the Middle Ages more devoted to Aristotle and his teachings than the mid-twelfth century churchman John of Salisbury. Admittedly, John knew far less of the Aristotelian corpus than would St. Thomas Aquinas a century later. But the elements of Aristotle s thought with which John was familiar, culled from those treatises available to him (Categories, De interpretatione, Topicsand Posterior and Prior Analytics), and gleaned from intermediaries like Cicero and Boethius, made a singular impression upon him. Certainly, Aristotle exercised an important, albeit subtle, influence in John s Policraticus and his letters. But it is in the Metalogicon, a survey of assorted issues in educational theory and speculative philosophy, that John gives freest reign to his sentiments about Aristotle. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - A clean copy. - From the text: It is arguable that the fifteenth century constituted a watershed in the long history of the emergence of nationhood as a feature of European political thought. Renaissance authors commonly glorified the special qualities and virtues of particular city-states and kingdoms; the study of European politics in a self-consciously comparative manner became fashionable. One might easily become so entranced by the nationalist enthusiams of the fifteenth century, however, as to neglect countervailing tendencies rooted in the same intellectual and political soil as nationalism. For critics of European nationalism emerged alongside theories of national social and political identity. The trend towards nationalism in political philosophy was not met with universal approval, and those who rejected the nation as a basic unit of political association did so by drawing upon the very same sources and doctrines which were employed to bolster ideas of nationhood. Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 377-390. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - A pristine copy. - From the text: Although it has become commonplace to regard Marsiglio of Padua s Defensor Pads (completed in 1324) as a quintessential work of medieval Aristotelian political theory, this view has been challenged for various reasons in recent years. Some scholarship has pointed to the superficial quality of Marsiglio s appeal to Aristotle s authority . Others have emphasized Marsiglio s decisive reliance on sources and doctrines which were quite at odds with his overtly Aristotelian commitments. A revealing measure of the depth of his Aristo-telianism is perhaps his failure to cite Aristotle s authority at all in the Defensor Minor, an abbreviated version of the Defensor Pads composed about 1340. At minimum, it seems necessary to reconsider the claim (pioneered already by Albertus Pighius in the sixteenth century) that Marsiglio was homo magis aristotelicus quam christianus . Indeed, it may be true to say that the assumption of Marsiglio s fidelity to Aristotle has acted as a filter, screening out interesting or original features of his thought because they are cloaked in outwardly Aristotelian language. Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 179-194. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - A good and clean copy. - From the text: It used to be fashionable among historians of medieval thought to posit the occurrence of an intellectual revolution around the year 1250 associated with the translation and transmission of Aristotle s Nicoma-chean Ethics and Politics. Indeed, some scholars went so far as to impute a sort of "epistemological break" between the pre- and post-Aristotelian periods. A classic proponent of this view was the late Walter Ullmann, who unreservedly proclaimed, "The influence of Aristotle from the second half of the thirteenth century onwards wrought a transmutation in thought that amounts to a conceptual revolution. In fact and in theory the Aristotelian avalanche in the thirteenth century marks the watershed between the Middle Ages and the modem period." Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 87-110. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Date underlined on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: Among the range of moral concepts that the Middle Ages derived from Aristotle, few exercised greater influence than the doctrine of habitus (a term ordinarily translated as habit, but more properly meaning state or condition ). In the thirteenth century, such prominent thinkers as Thomas Aquinas, Godfrey of Fontaines, Duns Scotus, and William of Ockham placed habitus (derived from the Greek term éxis) near the heart of their studies of ethics. It is largely possible to explain thirteenth-century interest in the concept of habitus on the basis of the appearance of Robert Grosseteste s full translation of Aristotle s Nicomachean Ethics. Grosseteste s Latin version, taken in conjunction with a growing interest in the field of ethics among arts masters, rendered the technical vocabulary of Aristotelian moral thought into a commonplace of scholastic philosophy. - Wikipedia: Cary J. Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 75-95. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Binding slightly bumped, otherwise very clean. - From the text: It is widely supposed among students ofRenaissance humanism that one of the unique contributions of the humanists was their rediscovery of the classical, essentially Ciceronian, ideal of the orator as the man who employs both reason and eloquence in order to serve the common good. In turn, this conception of oratory in Cicero s thought is closely aligned with his teaching that human association arises from the awakening of an implicit human gregariousness by means of the eloquence and wisdom of a primitive orator. This paper demonstrates that the Ciceronian idea of oration was a recurrent feature of scholastic thought from the twelfth to the early fourteenth century rather than an innovation of the Renaissance. In support of this claim, a wide range of writings, including the work of Thierry of Chartres, Brunetto Latini, John of Paris and Marsiglio of Padua, is considered. It is shown how these authors all derive from Cicero the lesson that the foundation and maintenance of communal bonds requires the presence of a wise and eloquent orator who will place the public interest above his own ends. In the Ciceronian ideal of oration, such medieval authors found a model for their conception of community and a framework for the determination of the responsibilities of rulers and citizens. paperback. Zustand: Gebraucht. Gebraucht - Sehr gut Leichte Lagerspuren -John of Salisbury (c.1115-1180) was the foremost political theorist of his age. He was trained in scholastic theology and philosophy at Paris, and his writings are invaluable for summarising many of the metaphysical speculations of his time. The Policraticus is his main work, and is regarded as the first complete work of political theory to be written in the Latin Middle Ages. Cary Nederman's 1991 edition and translation is primarily aimed at undergraduate students of the history of political thought and medieval history. His translation shows how important this text is in understanding the mores, forms of conduct and beliefs of the most powerful and learned segments of twelfth-century Western Europe. 272 pp. Englisch.

hardcover. Zustand: Sehr gut. Auflage: Bilingual. 318 Seiten Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). Very good, clean copy. The contributors to this book examine the diverse roles played by moral virtues in the political writing of the Later Middle Ages. Medieval political thought has a long tradition of scholarship, and its ethical dimension has always received sustained attention. This volume specifically concentrates on the meaning and function of virtues in a political context, a theme which has thus far been neglected. The authors deal with Latin texts (occasionally in combination with vernacular ones) from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries that define, legitimize, or criticize secular rule by using catalogues of virtues, originating from ancient philosophy as well as Christian moral theology. The contributions discuss various aspects related to this theme, such as the relation between the virtues of rulers and general moral precepts; the tension between secular or philosophical perspectives on virtue and Christian moral thought; the use of moral virtues for political ends; the balance between praise of the prince's virtues and criticism of his vices; and so forth. The medieval texts under discussion are of French, German, English, Italian, and Spanish origin, and vary from educational treatises and historiography to moral theology and political philosophy. content: Introduction 1 CARY J.
