Erstausgabe
First and sole edition of this rare poetical panegyric, issued in the year after Trafalgar; an online institutional search shows just four locations: British Library, National Maritime Museum, Oxford, and Stanford. The historian Timothy Jenks makes use of it in his recent study of the Royal Navy and cultural politics, employing it to remark on the contemporary near obsession with Nelson's damaged body: "Twenty-five of the first 111 lines in the first canto. [are] given over to invocations of Nelson's wounds. Not that this corporeal voyeurism was limited to the period after Nelson's death" (p. 198). Contemporary opinion was not kind to the anonymous author: the Critical Review, with yawning hauteur, noted that "we had hoped to see no more verses on Nelson; his memory has already been sufficiently insulted"; and the naval historian John Knox Laughton, writing in 1896, listed it in an appendix and remarked tersely "Verses in heroic metre; three cantos of them". Be that as it may, this is an interesting and highly elusive piece of Nelsoniana, exemplifying the extraordinary outpouring of national sorrow at his death and taking its place - admittedly a few rungs down - alongside such enduring works as Southey's Life. "At every level of society, among those who knew him personally and those who knew only his name, the news of Nelson's death was received as a personal grief" (N. A. M. Rodger in ODNB). The Critical Review, Third Series, Vol. IX, 1807; Timothy Jenks, Naval Engagements: Patriotism, Cultural Politics, and the Royal Navy 1793-1815, 2006; John Knox Laughton, Nelson and His Companions in Arms, 1896. Octavo (175 x 98 mm), pp. 46. Recent dark blue half calf to style, spine with gilt anchor device in compartments, red label, sides and corners edged with a blind roll, marbled sides, endleaves renewed. General finger soiling and marking. A good copy, neatly rebound.

First English edition, originally published in French in 1907, this is probably the black pearl of Nelson collecting. Nothing comparable was ever done in English. Corbett depended heavily on this "monumental work" for his important study of the battle published in 1910. "Published under the direction of the Section Historique de l'État-major de l'Armée it contains the first attempt to form a real Staff History of the campaign, and although it makes no pretence of dealing adequately with the unpublished English material, it places us for the first time in a position to see that campaign as it really was. My debt to Colonel Desbrière. is almost beyond recognition" (from Corbett's preface to The Campaign of Trafalgar). Provenance: neat pencilled inscription on title page versos, "Sir George Barnes Bequest 1960". After education at the Royal Naval Colleges at Osborne and Dartmouth, Barnes (1904-1960) had a distinguished career at the BBC, becoming controller, and was principal of University College of North Staffordshire, now Keele University (this set with the small University College embossed stamps at foot of title pages). Two volumes, octavo. Original black cloth, spines lettered in gilt. Photogravure facsimile frontispiece and 6 folding maps and plans in an end-pocket to volume I, 13 folding maps and plans in end-pocket to volume II. Slight roughening of cloth at foot of spines, relevant reviews mounted on front endpapers of vol. I (initialled by Sir George Barnes), slight stain to fore-edge of same volume with concomitant marginal staining to one gathering, couple of pale stains and old erasures to front free endpaper of vol. II, rear free endpaper in same volume just a little proud and nicked at fore edge, yet this remains a very good set, bright and square.

Erstausgabe
A superb set of the first and only English edition of a work which is without doubt the black pearl of Nelson collecting. Originally published in French in 1907, nothing comparable was ever done in English, Corbett depending heavily on this "monumental work" for his own important study of the battle published in 1910. Its importance has never been superseded, and strangely it has never been reprinted. This English edition was handsomely produced by the Oxford University Press. Provenance: neatly inked ownership inscriptions on the front free endpapers, "Jo. Hamilton, Ardent 1934". Sir John, Hamilton (1910-1994), was educated Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, and joined the Royal Navy in 1924, second in command HMS Ardent, 1934. He qualified as a gunnery specialist in 1936 and subsequently held significant postings in the field, becoming training development officer at the gunnery school 1939-40, and Fleet Anti-Aircraft Gunnery Officer 1940-42. Promoted to commander of the gunnery division in 1943 he was instrumental in planning naval fire support for Normandy landings, and subsequently compiling the analysis of operations. Transferred to South East Asia as commander, Naval Bombardment, Force 'W', he undertook the planning and training for a projected invasion of Malaya. He retired in 1967 as Commander-in-Chief Allied Forces, Mediterranean. Two volumes, octavo. Original black cloth, spines lettered in gilt, single fillet panels in blind to the boards. Photogravure facsimile frontispiece and 6 folding maps and plans in an end-pocket to volume I, 13 folding maps and plans in end-pocket to volume II. The lightest of shelf-wear, mild discolouration and pale foxing at the endpapers particularly around the folding maps, similarly slight dog-earing of the rear free endpapers from the end-pocket, contemporary Foyle's ticket, inverted, to the front pastedown of volume I, but overall an exemplary set.
