AS THEY WENT UP RIVER . . THEY WERE BOMBED & STRAFED BY JAPANESE AIR CRAFT . . RESULTING IN THE SINKING OF THE PANAY AND MURDER OF MANY . . * The shocking, true story as told by the American survivors of the disaster. The USS Panay was a U.s. Navy Patrol boat that protected American interests along the Yangtze River. The Panay docked at Japanese besieged Nanjing, taking on as many mixed foreigners as she could hold, and made for Hankow that night. It was the beginning of the "RAPE OF NANJING" by brutal out-of-control Imperial Japanese Army soldiers & marines. . The Japanese stormed through the streets with bayoneted rifles indiscriminately stabbing & shooting all in view, murdering thousands of Chinese men, women and children for the next several days. A reign of terror gripped the city and caused major panic to its citizens. . That next afternoon at 1:35pm, December 12th Japanese dive bombers and fighter aircraft unleashed a reign of bombs and strafed the ship killing crew and passengers, mortally wounding the ship. By 2:05 pm. the ship was sinking while the living tried to abandon ship, and hide in the shore reeds. The Japanese returned machine gunning the shore with their gunboats. By 3:34 pm, the Panay vanished and sunk. . The remaining survivors hid in the reeds until the next day the H.M.S. Bee, a British warship also nearly sunk rescued the survivors, and were delivered to Shanghai. . The Americans as led by Franklin D. Roosevelt the sitting president through his Japanese ambassador lodged serious complaints to the Japanese foreign office about the incident. Of course the Japanese "Deplored the incident" but the perpetrator General Iwane Matsui ["The Butcher of Nanjing"] was not punished. . *** The article is replete with 11 excellent black & white photographs. . *** ORIGINAL ARTICLES, THE FIRST PUBLISHED & ILLUSTRATED REPORT TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ABOUT THE BRUTAL JAPANESE "RAPE OF NANJING." . ***.
