Unbound. Zustand: Good. Folio. Large single sheet, folded to make four pages, measuring 16 ½ by 11 ½ inches. Large black and white photo of Huey P. Newton on the front cover, with a smaller image of him under printing on the rear page, accompanied by a photo of an audience. A speech by Black Panther Party leader Huey P. Newton, drawing on analysis of American history to highlight how systemic racism and exploitation was built into the founding of the United States and its Constitution, touching on Civil Rights, emancipation and other subjects. Newton concludes that the US needs a new constitution that incorporates the rights of all citizens, regardless of race, and that the constitution should reflect the racially diverse population. The Revolutionary People's Constitutional Convention was a conference organized by the Black Panther Party in 1970. Members of various organizations representing the Black Power movement, the Chicano movement, American Indian movement, women's and gay liberation attended, gathering in various workshops that created declarations to be incorporated into a new constitution. While this convention was considered a success, the momentum built from it was stalled at a second, failed convention in Washington, DC, due to disputes over venues, interference from police, etc. GOOD condition. Moderate toning to the piece. Minor soiling. Faint horizontal fold crease present. A few small chips and tears along the extremities.

Collection of five vintage bumper stickers from the 1968 political campaigns run via a collaboration between the Black Panthers and the Peace and Freedom Party. Each of the stickers were made for various Peace and Freedom Party political campaigns, including: Mario Savio for California state senator, Black Panther founders Huey Newton and Bobby Seale, and Eldridge Cleaver for president, and two stickers simply advertising the Peace and Freedom Party itself. In 1968 the Black Panthers would move away from direct actions (including their legendary confrontations with the Berkeley police department) and briefly into the political sphere, when they joined forces with the PFP, a left-wing anti-war party advocating Black liberation, women's liberation, and LGBTQ rights. The campaigns were largely seen as political statements, as Cleaver was a convicted felon and technically ineligible for the presidency due to his being under the age of 35 by the time of inauguration, and as Newton and Seale were on trial at the time, repeatedly being denied their civil liberties. All items rare, each with original peel-off paper backing, and each between 4 x 13.5 an 4 x 15 inches. Near Fine and unused, with light soil on two of the stickers and rubber stamp for the "Lancaster County Peace & Freedom Movement Organizing Committee" on the verso of one sticker. A few of these rear peel-off panels have come loose due to dryness, but most are intact, and the bumper stickers themselves are unaffected.

Original poster printed in black and red, measuring 17 1/2" x 21 3/4". Untrimmed at left and right edges (register marks still present). Near Fine, very bright and clean, with faint corner crease at bottom left. From the collection of a journalist/acivist who was involved in the defense of the Black Panthers. A visually striking poster announcing a May Day rally to force the US government to grant Black Panther Party co-founder Huey P. Newton release on bail. The text at the bottom reads: "Exhausting all legal means. Federal Judge Alfonso J. Zirpoli has set May 1st for a hearing to make the Reagan-Alioto power structure show why it will not release the Minister of Defense, Huey P Newton on bail, which Huey has a right to, while pending his appeal.".

Psychedelic poster celebrating the birthday of Huey P. Newton (1942 - 1989), the political and urban activist who with Bobby Seale, co-founded the Black Panther Party in 1966. Initially the Panthers were a community and grassroots organization seeking to break the cycle of poverty, drug abuse, and crime in the Bay Area; they became famous for organizing free breakfasts for schoolchildren. After Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination in April 1968, some of the black community questioned the strategy of non violent resistance and political agitation, favouring rhetoric and programmes that promoted African American separatism as well as the use of violence to obtain it. Newton was charged with two murders, although he was never convicted; he was also tried for embezzlement. He was killed in a West Oakland crack house after a dispute with a drug dealer on August 22, 1989. Not much is generally known about the artist, Bill Olive, who did a handful of other notable psychedelic posters during this period, other than he was an English artist, who had come to work for Earl Newman posters in Los Angeles, arriving in January 1968. Screen print on heavy wove paper. Presented in a hand finished black frame with conservation acrylic glazing. Small amount of ink loss due to a printing fault in the screen printing process to extreme left edge otherwise in excellent condition. Sheet size: 89 x 58.5 cm. Framed size: 97.3 x 67 cm.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. First edition. Introduction by Franz Schurmann. Near fine with the spine ends a touch bumped, a few tiny spots, and small subtle splash mark on the foredge in near fine dust jacket with the rear flap creased, small chip at the bottom of the spine and some wear at the corners. Inscribed by Newton to Franz Schurmann, who wrote the book's introduction: "To Franz all power to the people - from Huey - P.S. Thanks you for all your help - love you." Schurmann taught at the University of California, Berkeley for nearly 40 years, founded the Berkeley Faculty Peace Committee in 1964 and was an expert on China, according to his *The New York Times* obituary, which called his book *Ideology and Organization in Communist China* (1968), "one of the first significant accounts of life inside Mao's China." In Schurmann's introduction he compares China's revolution to that of the Black Panthers, who evolved from "a political weapon of self-defense by Black People" into a "growing party with a vision reaching out to the entire world . who want power, identity and respect for their own race," typified by their leader Newton, who is "no longer the Minister of Defense, but the Servant of the People." An especially nice association in a book seldom found signed.

A well-preserved and very substantial run of the Black Panther Party's official newspaper, with the issues representing a large swath of the paper's content, circulation, and overall aesthetic. In terms of content, Huey Newton was acknowledged as the chief theoretician of the Party and its newspaper, though in terms of generating mass-appeal, much of the credit goes to Emory Douglas: "Douglas's work on the Black Panther newspaper and for the party was fearless in content and style. He was the party's Revolutionary Artist, graphic designer, illustrator, political cartoonist, and the master craftsman of its visual identity. His distinctive illustrations styles, cartooning skills, and resourceful collage and image recycling made the paper as explosive visually as it was verbally.Part of Douglas's genius was that he used the visually seductive methods of advertising and subverted them into weapons of the revolution. His images served two purposes: to illustrate conditions that made revolution a reasonable response and to construct a visual mythology of power for people who felt powerless and victimized" (Durant, Sam (ed). Black Panther: The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas, pp.95-96).Contains an over-arching glimpse of the art, layout, production and content of the newspaper as well as the rise and fall of the Black Panther Party, with issues ranging from the earliest days through 1980. Visually stunning and innovative in its design and layout, they tell the story of the Black Panthers' struggle fighting racism and institutional violence and oppression. A key publication responsible for shaping African American revolutionary thought in the twentieth century; runs this extensive are very uncommon in commerce.
