London: Nichols, son, and Bentley, 1812-1816 and 1817-1858. 17 vols, thick 8vo, numerous engraved portrait plates (some folding) throughout both sets. Uniformly bound in contemporary russia gilt, marbled edges a superb set in almost flawless condition with only a couple of joints with small splits. Bookplate of Joseph Neeld in each volume. § Sets of this important reference work of the period are not rare, but very rare in fine contemporary bindings in good condition as it was (and is) a standard work of reference and usually much worn. John Nichols and his son John Bowyer Nichols were important publishers: "still a source mined with profit by scholars of eighteenth-century British literature and history" (Christopher Edwards, from whom this set came). Blake is not obviously referenced though he should have been, but there are many references to his contemporaries. Lowndes p.1686.

Manuskript / Papierantiquität
2pp., 12mo. Bifolium on grey paper. Aged and worn. Addressed on reverse of second leaf by Black, with his initials, to 'J B Nichols, esq | 25 Park Street.' An interesting glimpse of the editorial workings of the Gentleman's Magazine and Georgian periodical publication in general. Black complains that he has been 'waiting some days for the concluding sheet (as I suppose) of that part of which contains the Ferrar, - the end of the quarto MS. copy'. He asks Nichols to 'send it quickly, because I wish to ascertain how the end of the work may be best made up, not being satisfied with Sir Richard's papers which you kindly put into my hands. I wish to send them to him with my remarks, and a proof of the last sheet of my papers when it is ready'. In a postscript he asks for 'A proof of my Grimaldi paper'.

1p., 12mo. 21 lines. On aged paper, with remains of grey paper mount adhering to the reverse, and short closed tears to top and bottom right-hand corners, the latter through the signature. Nichols writes that he 'forgot the Principal Thing' he meant to say on putting 'the hasty Letter [.] in Mr Parcel', which is to thank him 'for the Offer of Mr Carte's Letters'. He will 'certainly make an opportunity of introducing from them any Extracts' that his recipient will 'point out', or, if he will lend him the volume, it will be 'carefully returned'. The number of pages the extracts may take up, 'more or less, is of no Consquence'. He ends by asking him to 'Pardon this Postscript to my former Letter'.

1p., 4to. Bifolium, addressed on reverse of second leaf by Stafford to 'Mr. Nichols | 25. Parliament St. | Westminster'. Very good, on lightly-aged paper, with seal cut away from second leaf and thin strip of stub along one edge. The letter reads: 'Lord Stafford received from the late Duke of Norfolk a Copy of Mr. Dallaway's work, & has since subscribed to one by Mr. Dallaway & Mr. Cartwright - if the volume referred to by Mr. Nichols is an additional work Lord Stafford will be happy to have it. | Ap. 27. 1831.' The note possibly refers to the new edition of 'The Parochial Topography of the Rape of Arundel in the Western Division of the County of Sussex' published by Nichols in 1832, part of Cartwright's revision of Dallaway's work, which Nichols had begun reprinting in 1830.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged. Handwriting practice in a nineteenth-century hand on the blank reverse of the second leaf. He 'must beg to correct' Nichols's 'intended Paragraph' (in the Gentleman's Magazine obituary of Sir Richard Colt Hoare) on the question of 'my Father's Christian names'. He has written 'Hugh Henry', 'which must be reversed to Henry Hugh'. He proceeds to give a transcription of how 'the paragraph will run': 'The Baronetcy devolves on his eldest Half-Brother Henry Hugh Hoare Esqr. the head of the eminent banking house in Fleet St. and the whole of the landed as well as personal property is strictly entailed on the Mae Descendants of the Family'. The text featured as a correction in the 'Minor Correspondence' section of the Gentleman's Magazine, October 1838.

All items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The letters total 49pp, 16mo and 8vo. All are complete except the last, which lacks the last part. They are liberally adorned with sketches. Mostly addressed to 'My dear Aunty' and signed in a variety of ways, from 'J. Bowyer B. Nichols' to 'BBN'. The first letter, dated 4 December 1871, sets the tone, showing Bowyer Nichols to be a precocious and spirited twelve-year-old. It begins: 'Will you send me, if you can find it, that poem about Sally Porter and Charlie Church? I forgot to take it upstairs last evening, after I had written it out. I think that most likely it is in the blotting-book. This afternoon I had my promised drill, I had an hour. I was so cold I thought I should be frozen. The boys have a pole, which two or three boys go on at once: [illustration Two other boys were on mine. / How is the Prince of Wales? He is very ill, isn't he? Everybody seems to be talking about it.' He notes that ''All the boys take a remarkable interest in my letter this evening.' Further topics include: the Tichborne Claimant ('I begin to pity the poor old creature. He's a horrible old heart, though'); the nature of the 'Bran Pie' to be eaten at a 'Juvenile Party'; the finding of 'the Autograph Catalogue' ('we had a bottle of champagne in honour of the occasion!'); a cricket match with another school ('They beat us by sixty runs!!!!'); the blowing over of 'the old cedar tree on the lawn'; social engagements; school gossip; the letters he has received; his reading; his need for new clothes. On 5 February 1874 he writes: 'I feel gloomy this evening - Perhaps it is the effect of reflecting on Greek Grammar Papers to come; perhaps of chocolate that is past.' His view (1 March 1874) of the outcome of the Tichborne case is expressed in quietly sarcastic terms: 'What think you of the verdict? Fourteen years will almost finish him, I should think. We got the news, "Guilty in every respect." at just before dinner yesterday morning. I heard Miss Hawkins say, "Of course, I have known all the while what the end would be. From the very first day," etc etc. Of course she knew. Everybody knew all the while. There wasn't the slightest doubt in anybody's mind. I've heard people say that they had heard that all the jury were not agreed, and that they were not so sure about the decision, but I've no doubt they said, immediately on receiving the news, "I told you so." We didn't hear about the 14 years till the evening, when there were bills posted about everywhere, "Telegrams addressed to the editor of the Hampshire Mercury (or Herald, or Argus, or something of the kind)" -'. The drawings (in pen and ink and pencil, with only one in colours) mainly depict figures in contemporary and historical costume, executed in detail with skill and wit, showing the influence of 'Punch', but also with an anomalous Edwardian feel. Subjects include a preacher in a pulpit; a Pre-Raphaelite maidens in kimonos; a woman in Grecian costume; 'Strephon' and 'Astrologos'; a woman playing the piano; ladies and gentlemen in evening dress and fashionable attire; a priest being beheaded by a knight; ladies and gentlemen in eighteenth-century costume; heads of a falcon; fancy initial capitals. They are present in the letters and on 24 pieces of paper, ranging in size from 7.5 x 10 cm to 28 x 32 cm. Again in good condition, with only two pieces damaged: the largest is worn and frayed at the extremities, and another piece has had a small hole made through it by the force of Nichols's pen strokes. The pieces of paper are taken from notebooks and cut from letters.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 2pp, 12mo. In good condition, on lightly discoloured paper, with thin neat strip from windowpane mount adhering to edges. Sixteen lines in a neat and stylish hand. Signed T. Crofton Croker . The recipient is not named, but is clearly John Bowyer Nichols, editor of the Gentleman s Magazine, in whose number for April 1839 appeared an article, with engraving, by E. I. C. , on Winchester House, Broad-street, London. Croker begins his letter: My dear Sir, / I return E. I. C s account of Winchester House. I think he is mistaken on so many points, and has omitted so much of interest that the best way of making the additions I had proposed wil be to give you a short comment on what you now print - for I require a reference or two, to be certain that I am quite right - for next month. He suggests that the recipient may wish to add that the greater portion of the wood work has been purchased by Mr Baylis and that he is fitting up with it the kitchen and some of the new rooms of the Prior s bank . The Pryor s Bank in Fulham was the residence of Thomas Baylis, F.S.A.

1p., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, aged and worn. Frank on reverse of damaged second leaf to 'Mess Nichols & Son | Parliament Street | Printers | W Curtis'. Seventeen lines of directions to ' his friends Mess Nichols & Son', regarding the binding of legislative works, beginning with 'two Statute books of Geo the Fourth'. Regarding 'an odd, abridgment of some of Geo 3d' he writes: 'it is probable there may be more, if so begs Mess N & Son would get them & bind them, if not it will hardly be worth the expense of binding the one'. The firm's principle premises, where John Bowyer Nichols was born, were in Red Lion Passage, Fleet Street.
