Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. Dust Jacket. 8vo. pp. [xiv], 99, [vii]. Original publisher's dark red cloth lettered gilt on spine. ISBN 9781891033339 Dark red illustrated dust jacket lettered in pale green and white on spine and covers. Presentation copy: 'For Guy, With my admiration & gratitude. You have become our guide & companion, as we go off to wander among the stars - Steven.' Three typed signed letters from Steven Nightingale to Guy Ottewell loosely inserted. The first is addressed from Steven Nightingale, Box 2071, Reno, Nevada 89505 to Mr. Guy Ottewell, Astronomical Workshop, Department of Physics, Furman University, Greenville, South Carolina 29613 dated 20 March 1996 and consisting of about 500 words in which Nightingale says he encloses a copy of his book 'Lost Coast' with gratitude to Ottewell for his 'wonderful and dependable Astronomical Calendar' which he has subscribed to for many years. He says 'I hope you will not be too alarmed if I convey to you my belief that you may be partly responsible for this text of mine.' He suggests this was due to his use of the 'Astronomical Calendar' and his study of the stars when he was on hiking trips. He continues by explaining the structure and content of his book and offers an invitation to meet up with Ottewell if he ever comes to California or Nevada. The second letter addressed as above dated 10 April 1996 consists of 110 words in which Nightingale thanks Ottewell for his note and says he'd love a response 'if you travel your way through "Lost Coast"'. He provides contact details and suggests looking at the stars together in the Great Basin - 'There are stars visible there that even the Hubble can't see.' The third letter addressed from Steven Nightingale, 1411 Native Sons Road, Woodside, CA 94062 to Guy Ottewell, 2 Sherborne Lane, Lyme Regis, Dorset DT7 3NY, United Kingdom, undated and consisting of about 370 words in which he says 'Here are the sonnets, straight out of the wild country of the West, where I have had many weeks of exploration; the wilderness leaves one in a trance at its beauties.' He then provides details about how he has adapted the sonnet form. Guy Ottewell (born 1955) a writer on astronomy published the famous annual 'Astronomical Calendar'. Steven Nightingale (born c. 1950s) American author of poetry, novels and essays and a history of 'Granada' where he lived for a time. Edges of cloth slightly sunned, otherwise very good indeed. Very good indeed. Signedes.
