Erstausgabe
First edition, first impression, of this beautifully illustrated and definitive guide to China's three thousand year-old culture of jade craftsmanship. Stanley Charles Nott was an international authority on the subject who also amassed one of the most significant modern private collections of Chinese jade specimens. Following a broadly chronological arrangement, this work describes the evolving aesthetic of jade vessels, artworks, scholarly accoutrements and luxury pieces from the Shang through to the Qing. The lavish number of illustrations capture the ever-increasing complexity and refinement of artisan carving, and useful appendices provide a glossary of Chinese terms and an introduction to carved ownership seals. The author secured the permission of King Edward VIII, Queen Mary, the Duke of Kent and the Crown Prince of Sweden to include photographic reproductions of specimens from their respective royal collections. Quarto. Original orange cloth, spine lettered in green, front board lettered in English and Chinese in red and green, pattern endpapers. With dust jacket. With 148 plates (39 in colour), map and diagrams in text. Wear to ends of spine and corners, mild soiling to boards. A very good copy in the well-preserved dust jacket, unclipped, with just a touch of wear to extremities.
