Including the novel The Vicar of Wakefield and various other poems and comedies, the volume features numerous illustrative plates and vignettes throughout, as well as a decorative border to each page. Oliver Goldsmith was an Irish poet and novelist, who gained great popularity during his lifetime. 'The Vicar of Wakefield', including in this volume, is arguably Goldsmith most popular work which remained widely read throughout the 18th century. In decorative half-morocco binding with gilt detailing and cloth covered boards. Externally sound, there is some wear to the joints and boards and wear to the extremities. The cloth is starting from the rear board. Internally, firmly bound. Page are lightly spotted throughout, with the text and illustrations remaining clear. Good. book.

A collection of the works of Oliver Goldsmith, containing 'The Vicar of Wakefield', selected poems, and comedies. 'The Vicar of Wakefield' is Goldsmith's best known work, and was one of the most popular and widely read novels of the Victorian era. The novel follows Charles Primrose, the vicar, as his family loses money, and sees him and his children through many trials and tribulations. Illustrated with a frontispiece, and many full page and in-text engravings. Oliver Goldsmith was an Irish novelist who is best known for this novel, though also for his pastoral poem 'The Deserted Village', and the plays 'The Good-Natur'd Man' and 'She Stoops to Conquer'. With an introduction, notes, and a life by John Francis Waller. Undated, dated from Jisc from a copy held at the British Library. Ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper, 'With love and good wishes to Matthew from Granny'. In a half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Some rubbing to the boards and spine, resulting in a small amount of loss of leather. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with some spots. Very Good. book.

The 'Life' of Goldsmith is misbound, with pages ix-xxviii followed by xxxvii-xliv and then pages xxix-xxxvi. With illustrations and decorative pages throughout. Appears to be lacking portrait frontispiece. No date on title page, running title as Cassell's Illustrated Goldsmith. With The Vicar of Wakefield, poems such as The Deserted Village and The Traveller as well as his comedies She Stoops to Conquer and The Good Natured Man. John Francis Waller wrote the life of Goldsmith as well as the notes to this volume. He was a well known Irish editor best known for his work of Dublin University Magazine under the pseudonym of Jonathan Freke Slingsby. In a full morocco binding with gilt stamping to boards and spine. Externally, generally smart with rubbing to the spine and joints. Small crack to tail of front joint. Internally, firmly bound. Spotting to first and last few pages, otherwise generally clean throughout. Very Good Indeed. book.
