Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Linguistic' theories in the eighteenth-century are also theories of literature and art, and it is probably better, therefore, to think of them as 'aesthetic' theories. As such, they are answers to the age-old question 'what is beauty?', but formulated, also, to respond to contemporary concerns. Edward Nye considers a wide range of authors from these two perspectives and draws the following conclusions: etymology is a theory of poetry, dictionaries of synonymy, prosody and metaphor are theories of preciosity, and Sensualism is a theory of artistic representation. The background to these contentions is outlined in Chapter One, in which Edward Nye traces the rise of the term 'nuances' as an attempt by contemporary authors to understand representation in art as a rationalization of chaotic reality. The demise of these contentions at the end of the century is described in the last chapter, in which the dominant language theory of the day, ideologie, is shown to be antagonistic to the study of art and literature. Theories of language are no longer an answer to the question 'what is beauty?'. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

She is responding to his 'kind wish, on the occasion of our last pleasant interview, that our intercourse might be Socially, if not professionally, renewed', by inviting him to dinner, in the hope that she may be 'so fortunate as to find you disengaged, & kindly disposed to favour me with your company'. See the two men's entries in the Oxford DNB. Plain postcard, with stamp printed in red. In fair condition, discoloured and worn. Addressed by Gore to 'W. D. Ross Esq / 6 Charlbery Road / Oxford'. Begins: 'Will you forgive a p. c.? I have no secretary & am rather overwhelmed with applications. You may not know that I did the thing you suggest at the meeting for Oxford House in Magd. Hall last summer. But besides this I must respectfully say that I cannot undertake any more work than I have already on hand up to next Easter. Forgive me. I have the best will. / Charles Gore'. The subject of the letter is presumably the Oxford House Anglican settlement in Bethnal Green.

An interesting letter, in which a knowledgeable contemporary gives an extremely critical opinion of Victorian restoration as it pertains to churches in Wales. Freeman's entry in the Oxford DNB describes how in his youth he had contemplated a career as an architect, and as a historian he showed 'an interest in field archaeology and architecture, with the ability to sketch buildings and their features'. 3pp, 12mo. On bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded twice. Signed 'Edward A Freeman'. The recipient is not named, but the letter comes with its stamped and postmarked envelope, addressed by Freeman to 'W. S. De Winton, / Brecon Old Bank / Haverfordwest'. Thirty lines of text. While he cannot be of much help concerning 'St Marys at Haverfordwest', he does remember being 'much struck with the single (I think) [?] very many years ago and saying something about it in the Archæologia Cambrensis of that day.' He turns to the question of church restoration: 'I tremble to think of that very fine work having to go through "restoration" at the hands of a modern architect. Remember the roof at Hodgeston.' (In 1851 the Cambrian Archaeological Association appointed David Brandon as the architect oversee the restoration of the parish church of Hodgeston, Pembrokeshire. The work was "intended to be a model for future church restorations".) Besides the 'cathedral church', he does not know of 'any other work in South Wales equal to that at [?] Haverfordwest', but he would not wish to make 'a hard and fast class list of chruches in Wales or eleswhere'. This might be done with 'single features, as towers', as he did in Somerset, but general comparison is difficult. 'E. g. Haverford with grand detail and no outline; Llanbedarn with a most stately outline & no detail.'.

3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded twice. The recipient is not named, but the conclusion of the letter makes it clear it is Poole. Written in a shaky hand a little over a year before Pattison's death. The context of the letter makes clear that as a married man, Poole is attempting to take advantage of the previous year's revision of the Oxford college statutes enjoining celibacy. It begins: 'Dear Sir | You seem to be under a misapprehension as to the historical lectureship for which you wish to become a candidate. | It is not a lectureship in this college, but in the combination Oriel-Lincoln. It is long since it ceased to be held by Mr Kitchin. The present holder, as you can see in the university calendar is Lodge of B[raze]. N[ose]. C[ollege]., and I am not aware that he has any intention of resigning.' He would be glad if the recipient 'could settle here, as there is a great want of real students in the department of history', but he 'could hardly encourage [him] to come merely as a coach, as the [?] is just now pretty well supplied with that article'. He concludes by asking to be kept informed of the recipient's address, so that he can let him now when he thinks 'there is an opening'. The letter concludes 'With kind regards to Mrs. R. L. Poole'. Poole would go on to prosper at Oxford, being appointed Keeper of the Archives and a lecturer in diplomatics.

12mo, 3 pp. Regarding the 'assigning of an income to the Regius Professor of Medicine out of the Ewelme Charity': 'I trouble you with a line to say that I have recommended the allowance of £250 a year, and that when the revenues of the Charity shall reach £1000 a year, it shall be submitted to the Court to increase the amount to £300 or £350'. Asks if there is 'any other matter connected with my office upon which you would wish for information, before I seek a week or two's repose? (of which I have had none, not even for an hour since I came into office.)'. The note to Acland (on the reverse of the second leaf of the bifolium) is addressed to him at Lavington, Petworth, and signed 'Samuel Oxon': 'My dear Acland will you send me this back with a line saying if there is anything touching Ewelme you would have me express'. Written up one side of the letter Wilberforce has written 'When do you come?'.
