Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good- dj. Illustrated by (dj) John O'Hara Cosgrave II (illustrator). First Edition. [slight fraying to cloth at base of spine, a bit of dust-soiling to top page edges; jacket edgeworn, small tears at several corners, spine faded, a few tiny tears and minor paper loss at top of spine]. First (and apparently only) novel by this Southern-born author, about a young black man who develops a fascination for a white prostitute who regularly passes through the town's "Negro quarter" as she crosses to the other side of town in search of customers. The man, Milo, is psychologically scarred from his boyhood experience of having been sent home after his mother had attempted to enroll him in an all-white school, while Vern, the woman, is dealing with the bitterness of having been abandoned by her soldier-husband, which forced her to turn to prostitution to survive.

12mo, 4 pp. Bifolium. 32 lines. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper. In answer to a request for autographs, she has 'some duplicates somewhere, but tonight I send you only three cards', as she has 'no letters of Miss Yonge that I should like to part with'. She names the authors of the 'three signed postcards' (not present) as: James Payne ('Editor of Cornhill, author of many novels'), Charlotte Yonge and Richard Monckton Milnes, Lord Houghton. Of the last she writes: 'I could not spare anything else of his, - & if you have another signature please let me have it back again - as also - the envelope - for that is also written by one who is dead - Hugh Conway - author of Called Back, etc. An envelope is better than nothing at all, I think.' She thinks it unlikely that Parker will be able to read the two men's cards, but assures him that 'they have written much more illegibly than they have done in these specimens!'.

Three postcards, good condition with postal marks. Text: "I must thank you with all my heart of the splendid review in The New Statesman including the delightful little allusion to my Selected Passages [ Selected passages from the works of Bernard Shaw ; Chosen by Charlotte F. Shaw. . Published: London : Constable, 1912]. It was more than satisfactory that you should specially have picked out the dissection of [Ibsen's] 'When we dead awaken - as that is my [underlined] particular hobb7y! It is a good play - but you have to get it in focus. It was 8 years before I could get GBS to do that! | I hope we shall see you when we get back. Did you see 'Androcles' last night? If you did it would be more than kind of you to tell me (on a postcard!) what you think of it. | I am doing a 'cure' for asthma here." Views of Mont-Dore on the recto of the postcard.
