[English Ballads] FINELY BOUND. Complete in three volumes. Octavo (22 x 15cm), pp.xcvi; 290 [2]; pp.viii; 318 [4]; pp.xxxvi; 340 [2]. Contemporary red full morocco, with raised bands, gilt titles to spines and upper boards, and elaborate blind tooling all over. All edges gilt; dark brown endpapers. Lightly toned throughout, with some spotting to first and final leaves of each volume. Heavy re-colouring to spines, with some bleeding into gilt, and some chipping. Good. A classic collection of 180 old English Ballads, first published in 1765, which inspired the poetry and prose of Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Scott, among many others. It is especially strong on border reiving songs, such as Chevy Chase, and includes sections on Robin Hood, St George, the Arthurian legends, and songs thought to have inspired Shakespeare.
