Erstausgabe
First editions of Pickering's Aldine series, celebrated both for the elegance of the typography and the diligence of its editors. This attractive set is suitably tooled with the dolphin and anchor device which Pickering appropriated from the Aldine press, paying homage to the beautifully produced work of the famous printer Aldus Manutius (c.1449-1515). The Aldine edition eventually ran to 53 volumes and was completed in 1844. Pickering's ambitious project brought him "more fame. than any other of his undertakings" (Keynes, p. 26). After his death in 1854, the rights of the Aldine Poets were acquired by Bell & Daldy, but Pickering's original issue is "a much more satisfactory possession than subsequent editions, which do not bear the same stamp of individuality" (Keynes, p. 22). Geoffrey Keynes, William Pickering, publisher: a memoir and a hand-list of his editions, 1924. 30 volumes, octavo (166 x 103 mm). Finely bound in early 20th-century green morocco by Root & Son, spines with raised bands tooled in gilt, compartments lettered and decorated with delicate ivy leaf design in gilt, covers framed in gilt enclosing Aldine device, board edges and turn-ins gilt, floral patterned endpapers, top edges gilt, red bookmarkers. Coleridge bound without frontispiece. 12 steel-engraved portrait frontispieces, Aldine device to title pages, bound with publisher's advertisements at front. Gift inscription to Sir William Bollard (1772-1840) to third leaf of Poems of Parnell. Spines uniformly faded to brown, spots of rubbing, occasional faint foxing to contents, loss to bookmarkers. Near-fine copies.
