Quérard VII, 300; Chadenat 5112; zur engl. Ausg. vgl. Henze IV, 421 f. Erste französche Ausgabe dieser erstmals 1816 in englischer Sprache erschienenen Reisebeschreibung (`Travels in Beloochistan and Sinde`). Vorsatzpapieren. Bd. 1 am unt. Kapital lädiert, Ecken bestoßen, Kanten berieben, Bd. 2 m. 2 Beschädigungen im Leder durch Wurmfraß, vereinz. stockfl., im Text sehr sauberer u. guter Zustand, Karte m. kl. Einriss.

1st French edition. Translated. from the English by J.B.B. Eyriès. 2 volumes. Volume I: Engraved frontispiece, vi + 465 + [1] errata. Volume II: 381pp + [1] errata, folding map. Full calf worn with some loss at corners and joints, upper joint volume 1 split, marbled endpapers, light Library of Congress duplicate stamp on a preliminary leaf of each volume, some light occasional browning and soiling but generally the text is very clean and sound. The French edition was occasioned by the French interest in Persia which dated from the time of Napoleon's military (and cultural) expedition to Egypt in 1798 and his dreams of conquests further east, including British India. A French military mission to Persia led to Anglo-French rivalry at the Persian court. Pottinger?s travels in eastern Persia and Scinde were an off-shoot of Sir John Malcolm?s several missions from British India, which was held to be threatened by the French and Russian ambitions of the time, and more information was being sought on the territories adjacent to India. Pottinger?s book was a pioneering work, and its competence reflected the future Sir Henry Pottinger?s glittering career as military Commander and Chief Plenipotentiary in the second half of the First Anglo-Chinese War and as first Governor of Hong Kong.

First edition of this uncommon novel, presentation copy inscribed by both authors on the front free endpaper to notable book collector Samuel Garcia Asher (c. 1868-1938) "To Dear old Sam, from his old pal 'Swears' Ernest Wells, 'Pot' H. P. Stephens"; and with his armorial bookplate to the front pastedown. Uncommon: WorldCat locates only nine copies in the US and four in the UK (BL, Cambridge, NLS, Dublin); WorldCat adds two more copies (Oxford, London Library). Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, titles in red and black to spine and front cover, pictorial designs to latter in red, black, and white of a devilish "swell" set against a moonlit London cityscape. Title printed in red and black, 4 pp. of publisher's advertisements at end. Cocked, corners gently bumped, extremities a little rubbed, the binding otherwise unfaded and square, front hinge cracked but firm, faint spotting to endpapers, internally clean and fresh; a very good copy.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good overall. Material on China, the Wilkes Exploring Expedition to the Antarctic, planting the church in the colonies (Australia & New Zealand), and a review of Dun's History of the Oregon Territory. Littell's Living Age was a magazine that comprised sophisticated selections from various British and American magazines and newspapers, a "Reader's Digest" of it's day. It was generally published on a weekly basis for almost a century, from 1844 to 1941. It was also often the first US publication of serialized stories by important mid-19th century authors such as Trollope. 8vo, approximately 800 pp, bound in original pebbled black morocco with brown boards, gilt title & decoration on raised bands. Generally a little rubbed, especially at spine.
