A collection of poetry by Adelaide Procter, preceded by an introduction by Charles Dickens that provides a short account of his publishing of her work in his journal 'Household Words,' as well as a short biography of her. Adelaide Procter was a 19th century English poet known for her work with homeless people and unemployed women, as well as her somewhat feminist views on issues of the day. While much of her poetry reflects religious themes, some also document the lives of the less fortunate of her era (see Wikipedia). GOOD condition. General fading and very minor soiling. Extremities scuffed and bumped. Previous owner's signature in the interior. Hinges shaken but holding. Minor toning to the paper.

The poems are influenced by Procter's own religious beliefs, being a Catholic, as well as her charity works, such as homelessness, poverty, and fallen women. Volume I with a frontispiece. Volume I with an introduction by Charles Dickens. Written by Adelaide Anne Procter. Procter starting writing and publishing poetry when she was still a teenager. Her father, the poet Bryan Waller Procter, was also a friend with Charles Dickens, as well as being friends with Elizabeth Gaskell, Leigh Hunt, and Charles Lamb. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper, 'Horence Edith, Sep 15 1900'. In a full crushed morocco binding. Externally, smart. A little rubbing to the spine.
