With a lens he was able to see the oogonoa (the female sex organs) and the antheridia (the male sex organs) within the conceptacles, but he interpreted these as seeds, correctly noting that each conceptacle had an opening externally through which they could escape."(A.G.

Large 8vo. 1 p. In French: "By order of the Academy we have read the Letters Patent of Oct. 26 1742 by which the King grants to Sir Francois Fresneau, former surgeon on His Majesty s ships, the exclusive privilege of constructing, selling, and distributing, for a period of 30 years, a stove invented by him for different kitchen procedures using a single flame [.] we declare that this stove can be very useful, provided that the author does not multiply its operations excessively [.]". Signed by de Reaumur, with counter-signatures by fellow members of the Academy of Sciences Jean Hellot and Louis-Léon Pajot d Onsenbray. Also endorsed in the upper right by Francois Fresneau, providing the date. In very good condition, with intersecting folds. Uniform toning, with a few spots and ink flecks along bottom. A rare association of prominent scientists of the period.
(Paris, L'Imprimerie Royale, 1719). 4to. Without wrappers. Extracted from "Mémoires de l'Academie des Sciences. Année 1717". Pp. 177-194 and 2 large folded engraved plates. First printing of a famous paper in which Rèaumur showed how perls could be grown artificially in bivalves."In 1715 his investigations of artificial pearls led him to study the substance that gave luster to the scales of fishes. These researches in return linked to inquiries that he had undertaken since 1709 into the formation of mollusk shells, which he showed to grow by the addition of successive layers rather than by the incorporation of new matter into the already existing structuree. In 1717 (in the paper offered) he attempted artificially to stimulate pearl formation in bivalves."(DSB XI, p. 331)."Réamur was among the greatest naturalists of his or any age. In the breadth and range of his researches, in the patient detail of his observations, and in the brilliant ingenuity of his experiments, it would be difficult to name his equal. Thomas Henry Huxley has compared him favorably with Darwin."(DSB XI, p. 331).

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. London, J. and P. Knapton, and P. Vailant, 1744 [first edition in English]. Octavo, [xvi], 452, [16] (index) pages plus 12 folding plates. Full polished calf with the sides gilt-ruled and the spine decorated and ruled in gilt in compartments, with a (later) leather title-label; joints a little cracked but firm; corners bumped; light wear to the extremities, with minor loss to the headband; bottom edge a little inkstained, bleeding very slightly into a few margins; rear flyleaf removed; offsetting to the endpapers, title page, and portions of the blank verso of the last two plates (from the leather turn-ins); minor surface loss to the front pastedown (where an early signature has been erased); top edge of one plate and the leading edge of another slightly proud of the edges of the text-block, and now slightly discoloured and very lightly chipped; trifling signs of use and age; a very good copy. The nine-page introduction by the unidentified Bazin quotes his sources: 'To what M. de Réaumur has said, in his Memoir concerning Bees, I have added every thing which had relation to that subject, which is found in his other memoirs'. Bazin presents his version in the form of a dialogue: 'I shall content myself with representing Clarissa as the mistress of a family, residing in the country of her own estate . Eugenio, the other person of the dialogues is the author; and though he borrows almost all his facts from M. de Réaumur, though he often copies his expressions, 'tis still Eugenio, who is accountable for the use he makes of them'. Provenance: Professor Frederic Wood Jones (1879-1954), anatomist, naturalist and anthropologist, with his name-label on the front pastedown.
Paris, L'Imprimerie Royale, 1732. 4to. Without wrappers. Extracted from "Mémoires de l'Academie des Sciences. Année 1730". Pp. 452-507 a. 1 folded engraved plate. With titlepage to Année 1730/1732. Titlepage with small tears to margins. Clean and fine. First appearance of this importent paper in which Reaumur reveled how he constructed his invention of the thermometer scale, the scale which bears his name. The construction of the thermometer was based on alchohol, and the scaling bases on 0 degree for the freezing point of water and 80 degree for the boiling point of water."The one serious drawback to Réaumur?s thermometer was that different strengths of alcohol have different coefficients of dilation, so that while one type of alcohol might expand one degree after the application of a certain amount of heat, another might expand two degrees under the same conditions. It was vital that all thermometers scaled according to his system have the same grade of alcohol. Réaumur suggested that the alcohol used in his thermometers be of a type that would dilate 80 degrees - that is, 8 parts in 100 - between the temperature of ice and the temperature at which the alcohol began to boil in an open thermometer tube. Owing to an unfortunate confusion of language in his article on the thermometer, however, nearly everyone believed that 80° on his scale was the temperature of boiling water" and as a result, when so-called Reaumer thermometers began to be made by the artisans of Paris, they were nearly all scaled linearly with respect to two fiducial points, 0° for ice and 80° for boiling water."
