Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. First Edition. London, Basilisk Press, 1976. Four volumes (one folio, three oblong quarto), printed on mould-made rag wove paper. The first three volumes are high-quality colour facsimiles, reproducing the manuscript text and numerous watercolours of the original volumes, complete with folding overlays (with tab and slot fastenings) to many of the views; the fourth volume (of explanatory text) includes 11 pages of plates from photographs by Eric de Maré. Quarter red morocco and marbled boards, lettered in gilt on the spines; slight cockling to a few leaves in each of the first three volumes (possibly due to the adhesive used in mounting the plates); a fine set, each volume with an individual slipcase, and all housed in a sturdy cloth-covered box (a little rubbed). Number 99 of only 500 sets for sale (a further fifteen hors-de-commerce sets were also produced). This lavish facsimile edition reproduces detailed plans by Humphry Repton, the doyen of late Georgian landscape architecture, outlining improvements to three important properties: Sherringham [i.e. Sheringham] Hall, Norfolk (1812); Antony House, Cornwall (1792); and Attingham Park, Shropshire (1798). These are accompanied by a uniform volume of explanatory text by Edward Malins. The first volume (Sheringham) includes plans for a new house, designed by Repton's architect son John Adey Repton, in addition to Humphry's designs for the park. 'Humphry Repton (1752-1818) was the leading landscape architect of his day, a master of his craft and an expert in the arts of self-promotion. Congenial, witty, and well connected, he circulated easily in the highest reaches of English society, where he could recruit wealthy clients prepared to pay handsomely for his advice. He presented his plans to his clients in the form of Red Books, thus named for their characteristic red morocco bindings. A typical album contains his observations on the present state of a client's property and his recommendations on how it might be improved. He would compose an eloquent account of his proposals, which would be written out in a fine copperplate hand. A number of watercolor illustrations would accompany the text, some of them furnished with hinged or sliding overlays making it possible to compare before-and-after views of the same scene' (The Morgan Library and Museum website).

First edition. Folio. [4], x, 41, [1] pp., with twenty plates and illustrations, comprising an engraved hand-coloured general ground plan and 19 aquatints including a frontispiece of ?Flora cherishing Winter &c.? by J.C. Stadler, 9 of them hand-coloured (6 of these with overslips, one with an over-page, one double-page, one folding), and 2 with sepia wash, all by Stadler after Repton. Modern half brown morocco outlined in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, with marbled paper covered boards, marbled endpapers, all edges untrimmed (upper corners bumped, the binder has used 'Pavilion' on the spine, otherwise an excellent copy.). London: by J.C. Stadler. Repton's designs for the Pavilion at Brighton. Tipped-in is a note in the hand of George IV as Prince of Wales ?Lt.Gen'l. Turner Carlton House, G.P.R.? (i.e. General Prince Regent). Repton had long sought Royal patronage and so saw the commission by the Prince of Wales to propose designs for the refashioning of the Royal Pavilion as one the greatest honours of his career. Although he enlisted the help of all three of his sons his designs were not implemented and he received no money for the work; the designs by John Nash which were eventually built though, were partly based on Repton's and this book remains as a tribute to his vision.

Second edition, 4to (344 x 277 mm), 16, 222, [2]pp., stipple-engraved portrait frontispiece by W. Holl after S. Shelley, dedication leaf, 12 hand-coloured aquatint plates (9 with overslips), 15 plain or tinted aquatint or engraved plates (3 with overslips), 32 illustrations (2 with overslips, one hand-coloured), some occasional light scattered spotting and browning, closed tears near folds of 'General View of Bayham' plate (old paper repairs to verso), contemporary diced russia, gilt dentelles, spine with raised bands in six compartments, this being Repton second major work on landscape gardening and so denoted in the lettering to the fifth compartment, edges marbled, with just minor rubbing otherwise a fine copy. Humphry Repton (1752-1818) is perhaps Britain's most famous landscape gardener. In this, one of his most celebrated works, he incorporates his method of inserting flaps in the plates which when folded show his proposed alterations to the scene and when opened it revels the original scene. This book includes coloured aquatints, reproduced from his own sketches in his manuscript Red Books, and in the preface he acknowledged Mr Clarke and his large group of colourists. Provenance: Bookplate of Colonel John Bullock of Faulkbourne M.P. (1731-1809); Armorial bookplate of Henry Rogers Broughton, 2nd Baron Fairhaven (1900-1973). First edition of the second of Repton's three works featuring his ingenious use of folding overslips to show the estates before and after improvement. "These three works are chiefly compiled from the author's 'Red Books' and are illustrated with facsimiles of the original sketches, engraved in aquatint. These publications are important as records of Repton's work and views as a landscape gardener. But they are also among the finest examples of books to appear in this country illustrated by the aquatint process" (Henrey).

First edition, 4to. (34 x 27 cm)., stipple-engraved portrait frontispiece, 25 aquatint plates and 2 line-engraved plates, of which 12 are hand-coloured or tinted and 12 plates have overlays, 10 aquatint head and tail pieces and numerous woodcut illustrations in text, 2 of the vignettes with overlays, folding plate at page 208 with tears into image repaired, contemporary half calf, joints and extremities repaired, lightly worn. An important work which provides 'a guide to [Repton's] approach to landscape design, with explanations of his aims and his methods of achieving them in specific instances'. The book is a compilation of texts from a number of the Red Books he had composed since his last publication, many of them now lost - those for Balstrode, Corsham, Gayhurst, Shardeloes, and West Wycombe. Several others are now in American collections - those for Armley, Brandesbury, Culford, Ferney, the Royal Fort, Bristol, and Stonelands. Repton's Red Books, almost always bound in red morocco, included Repton's suggestions for ways to make clients' estates even more beautiful; with a hill removed here, a lake created there, a clump of trees artfully placed. The books were not printed but were manuscripts with the texts, maps, and drawings done by experts at the height of their professions. Each book included a before and after - a watercolour view of the chosen scene after proposed changes had been made, overlaid by a hinged cutout turning the picture back to the original view. The Red Books formed handsome albums of views for display in the patron's library, to serve as plans or to record work in progress. But Repton's work was very expensive: some clients commissioned their surveys for social prestige, but never attempted to put his recommendations into practice. Repton's Observations is, in effect, a handbook of tricks of the trade, or rather profession, for, unlike Capability Brown, who had usually contracted himself for work, Repton acted only as a consultant and overseer (Millard). 'The overlays in Repton's books on landscape gardening, by means of which he showed selected prospects before and after he had turned his hand to them, have caused collectors to treasure his engravings as curiosities, but they are remarkable as well for the evidence of his draughtsmanship' (Ray). Millard, British Books, 65 (second edition); Abbey Scenery 390; Berlin Kat. 3431; Ray 38.

Numerous engraved aquatint vignettes, one hand-colored, two with overslips. After trying and failing in a multitude of business endeavors, Repton launched himself as a "landscape gardener," a term he coined himself. Some plate offsetting, frontispiece portrait toned, endpapers renewed, text generally clean, two large foldouts with nicks result of careless folding repaired with archival clear tape at corners. Erstausgabe
First edition, with the bookplate of the celebrated collector John Roland Abbey, of Repton's final treatise on landscape gardening, featuring his characteristic ingenious overslips, showing the changed landscape before and after his improvements. Repton was the most prominent landscape gardener of his generation, with his designs visible across the great estates of the country to this day. "His influence on English landscape gardening has proved more powerful than that of any of his predecessors, rivals, or successors. The flexibility of his style, applicable to small gardens and large parks, incorporating a variety of architectural and horticultural features, and accommodating informal, domestic social arrangements, has ensured an enduring appeal" (ODNB). This final work was written as he was declining in fortune, a victim of his own success, and as the war years and economic depression reduced the desire for vast landscaping projects. "He was caricatured in Jane Austen's Mansfield Park (1814) as a generic name, 'Repton, or any body of that sort', for the fashion-conscious to commission. Fragments is a valedictory work, charting the break-up of landscape gardening and the society which sustained it" (ibid.). The work thus marks, to some extent, the end of a golden age of landscape gardening, a phenomenon which remains a key feature of the Georgian era in popular memory. Fragments brings together Repton's lifetime of practical experience into a single theory of landscape design which was intelligible to the layman. He died two years later. His son, John Adey Repton, had worked with his father on many projects and had assisted in the writing of the book; following his father's death he worked chiefly on the continent, making extensive changes to a number of estates. The English book collector John Roland Abbey (1894-1969) is esteemed as perhaps the greatest collector of English colour plate books; his "colour-plate collection showed genuine originality and his catalogues represented real advances of knowledge" (ODNB). The catalogues of his collection remain the core reference works for books in the subject. Abbey acquired duplicates, and his catalogue entry for this work describes a different copy. Abbey Scenery 391; Martin-Hardie, p. 129; Prideaux, p. 349; Tooley, p. 208. Large quarto (341 x 277 mm). Contemporary russia, spine lettered in gilt, richly gilt in compartments, wide gilt and blind panelling to covers, gilt serrated cover edges, brown endpapers, gilt edges. With 43 aquatint plates from drawings by Humphry Repton, of which 21 are hand-coloured, 11 with overslips, 3 double-page; 5 are tinted, one with overslip; the remainder uncoloured, 3 with overslips; 9 aquatint vignettes in the text, 2 with overslips; numerous woodcuts in the text. Complete with half-title and errata. Neat restoration to spine and joint ends and inner hinges, scattered very faint foxing, notwithstanding a clean, handsome, very desirable copy.
