Dionysius Lardner, 1793 1859, was an Irish scientific writer who popularised science and technology, and edited the 133-volume Cabinet Cyclopedia. Lardner entered Trinity College, Dublin in 1812, and obtained a B.A. in 1817 and an M.A. in 1819. Whilst in Dublin, Lardner began to write and lecture on scientific and mathematical matters, and to contribute articles for publication by the Irish Academy. In 1828 Lardner was elected professor of natural philosophy and astronomy at University College, London, a position he held until he resigned his professorship in 1831. Lardner showed himself to be a successful popularizer of science. He was the author of numerous mathematical and physical treatises. It is as the editor of Lardner's Cabinet Cyclopaedia (1830-1844) that he is best remembered. "Lardner's editorship of the Cabinet Cyclopedia, which he had proposed to the Longman publishing group in 1827 or 1828, continued through the 1830s, bringing him into contact with leading literary figures, and it was especially important to his contemporary renown. It eventually comprised 133 volumes, published between 1830 and 1844; all but the final four volumes appeared before 1840. For the Cyclopedia he solicited contributions from eminent literary figures" and "enrolled prominent scientists as well". This impressive list includes Sir Walter Scott, Mary Shelley (though anonymous), Robert Southey, Thomas Moore, Sir David Brewster, and John F. W. Herschel. Lardner himself was the author of the treatises on arithmetic, geometry, heat, and hydrostatics and pneumatics. (DNB) In publisher's original cloth binding.
