8vo, engraved portrait frontispiece and title page, and pp. [iii]-xi, [iii] blank, 240; frontispiece with tear, and strengthened at inner margin, and title page lower margin renewed; else a decent copy, in contemporary Italian sheep, spine gilt, a little worn but sound. First edition in Italian of Reynolds's Discourses, translated by Giuseppe Baretti. The translation had been made at Reynolds's own request some time earlier, for Samuel Johnson recorded in December 1776 that Baretti had been paid 25 guineas for the job. The book was adopted and seen through the press by Luigi Siries, agent to the Grand Duke of Florence, and was favourably received in Italy. Nonetheless, Baretti was furious when he received the book, for it scarcely resembled the book he had been expecting: his preface had been discarded, as had Johnson's dedication; his own name had been omitted from the title page, and the text of the lectures had been tampered with. In his anger, Baretti wrote a four-page pamphlet, now extremely rare, attacking Siries in very undiplomatic language. Although other editions of these seven discourses appeared some years later, Reynolds seems to have taken Baretti's side, because no further discourses were allowed to appear in Italian. Hilles, Literary Career of Reynolds, pp. 51-9 and 287 ('Common in Italian libraries; rare elsewhere'). NUC lists copies at Chicago and Illinois only.
