Sewn as issued, pictorial wrappers. As new. Stockholm, Stockholm University, 1992. Diss. 8vo. 210 pp. + Annex 1-11 [110 pp.] + abstract leaf. With index. Contents: "A theoretical summary of exchange and trade in the iron age context" and "Household economy and archaeology". (Stockholm Studies in Archaeology, 12.) - - - Abstract: "A household-economic perspective of archaeology should take into account facts which impact on the households' economy, such as exchange and trade, considerations regarding the size of households, their subsistence economy and socio-economic position. Male and female household-economic roles / activities can be deduced from the artifacts. The production factors (natural resources, labour, capital, power / organization) in a region determine the economic situation of the households as well as their possibilities to accumulate a surplus for exchange and trade. The approximate socio-economic status of the deceased or of the households is assumed to be shown by relative 'grave values', estimated on the basis of objects in graves. Hypotheses are tested based on the keywords 'quantity, quality and variety'. Case studies to elucidate the application of the household-economic considerations concern the Bækkegård and Glasergård cemeteries on Bornholm, the Lunda RAÄ 27 cemetery on Lovö in Lake Mälar and the Genesmon farmstead in Northern Ångermanland. All cases concern the Iron Age (the 1st millenium A.D). A production factor analysis shows that all the sites had good prerequisites for the subsistence of the households. The socio-economic analysis of the content in the graves on the cemeteries, based on estimated 'grave values' shows, inter alia, that female graves lead in rich gravegifts, especially as regards female personal items. Household-economic activities are mirrored only to a minor extent by some household objects in the graves. The frequency study of objects found on the farmstead shows on the other hand a predominance of household objects, whereas male and female personal items and, in particular, those made of valuable metals are rare. The thesis concludes that a production factor analysis is a help to restructure an economic background for envisaging the living conditions of the households in a region and also the possible prerequisites for exchange and trade. The method used to estimate 'grave values' can be improved in order to account for an object's form and size, elaboration, weight and - in relevant cases - metal used. An economic evaluation of graves may not correctly simulate a real household-economic situation. Objects from excavated cemeteries have most probably been deposited according to specific norms. A household-economic perspective is better applied to settlement excavations, where the random discarding of objects could illustrate the real prehistoric consumer behaviour and possession of objects for household purposes. The results in the Gene case seem to a certain extent justify this statement but more cases arc needed to verify this. The thesis ate only at pointing Out ways and means for using a household-economic perspective without striving for precise results.".
