Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Limited Edition. Ltd. ed., #43 of 100. 96 p. 25 cm. Title page and headpieces by Edmund H. Garrett. Frontispiece. White cloth hardcover with gold lettering. Soiled and spotted. Spine ends softened. Worn spine label. Bookplate, stain, foxing and inscription on front endpapers. Pages untrimmed, except top, which is gilt. Drake's life was something of a story, finding him parentless and poor in youth, marrying well, and then dying young. His talent for poetry got him published in the New York Evening Post as one of a group that called themselves the Croakers. Unfortunately, he did not live to see the publishing and success of The Culprit Fay, which would prove to be his most popular work. Also includes miscellaneous poems such as Niagara, Written in a Lady's Album, To Eva, Bronx, The American Flag, etc.

Erstausgabe
Unbound. Zustand: Good. Lithographed broadside. Designed by E.D. Grafton. Printed by T. Bising. Measuring 19½" x 25½", but trimmed (see below). Illustrated with a large central portrait of actor and abolitionist James E. Murdoch holding the American flag, flanked by two soldiers with flags and Liberty above him, featuring elaborate scrollwork and two borders of plants and flowers. Tipped-on to larger modern card stock for stabilization using five small pieces of archival adhesive attached to the verso. Edge chips and tears (the longest being 3½" at the topedge), one partial horizontal crease, staining in the upper left, light foxing and the several tape shadows, good only. A handsome patriotic image honoring Murdoch, the "fervent declaimer" of Drake's poetry. The broadside commemorates James E. Murdoch's performance at Pike's Opera House in Cincinnati on October 31, 1864 (possibly published to celebrate the end of the Civil War). That night Murdoch performed Drake's famous poemâ"Drake was an early American poet who died young in 1820â"as well "Sheridan's Ride," his own composition, written the morning of the performance. *OCLC* locates a single copy, at the American Antiquarian Society. Theirs is hand-colored and has been mounted to a larger sheet, measuring 22" x 28", almost certainly as issued. (This copy has been trimmed down to the approximate size of the original print, likely for framing.) The AAS copy shows a light gray borderâ"visible at the very edge of our copyâ"and beneath it is printed the the publication information: Cincinnati, E.C. Middleton & Co., and an 1866 date. Curiously, the copy at AAS seems to be lacking the designer and printer information, printed in red beneath the inner decorative border of this copy: "Designed by E.D. Grafton, Cincinatti" and "T. Bising Lith." A handsome and rare patriotic broadside, printed in Cincinnati.
