4to. pp. 1 p.l., [10]list of subscribers, [40], 432, [11]appendix, [1]blank, [2]errata & ads. engraved frontis. portrait & 5 folding engraved plans. 2 engraved headpieces (coats of arms). modern quarter calf (2 plans with neatly repaired tears - no loss, light dampstain to 1 plan). First Edition of this biography of military commander John Lindsay, twentieth Earl of Crawford [1702-1749]. In 1735 he received permission to join the imperial army under Prince Eugéne, distinguishing himself in particular at the battle of Claussen. In April of 1738 he travelled to St. Petersburg, having received from the Czarina Anne Iwanowa the command of a regiment of horse with the rank of general, and joined the army of Marshal Munich, then engaged in a war against the Turks. "He soon acquired great proficiency in the mode of warfare practised by the Russians, and excited special admiration by his horsemanship and his prowess with the sword. After the retreat of Munich to Kiow, Crawford left him and joined the imperialists near Belgrade. In April he rejoined the imperialists at Peterwaradin under Marshal Wallis. At the battle of Krotzka, 22 July, 1739, he was so severely wounded by a musket ball in the left thigh, that for some time his life was despaired of, and his health was permanently injured.". (DCB) He later served under the Earl of Stair at Hoschstet, and commanded the brigade of life guards at Dettingen. With the rank of brigadier-general he joined the allied army near Brussels in May of 1744, and fought at the battle of Fontenoy in April of 1745. The following May he was made a major-general, and on the outbreak of the rebellion in Scotland, he was appointed by the government to command six thousand Hessian troops, with whom he secured the towns of Perth and Stirling, and the passes into the lowlands. He subsequently served for a brief period in the Netherlands.
