Buch Erstausgabe
Account of 17th-c. Russia from a 'cabinet de lecture' --- First edition in French of Collins's celebrated 'The Present State of Russia', "a very entertaining account of life in the Russian court" (original DNB) and the author's only book, published in English a few years before this translation, in 1671. A charming, wide-margined example, entirely uncut and from an anonymous 'cabinet de lecture', a private lending library with its letterpress "Conditions proposées à Messieurs les Abonnés pour la Lecture" pasted to the front free endpaper, witness to the book's previous life in one of these early French subscription libraries, about which little is known. The information contained on the label here is thus significant, such as the penalties for any damage to or writing in books (in the margins, on the endpapers, or the cover, whether in pencil or ink). Collins (1619 1670) accepted a position as physician to Tsar Alexei, the father of Peter the Great, in 1660; the present work contains his observations on life at the Romanov court and views on all aspects of Russian life. He discusses the Russian Church, describing a wedding, a funeral, and the festivals and traditions of the Orthodox year, such the use of icons in devotion, the giving of Easter eggs, and the predilection of the Russians for celebratory drinking. There are chapters, too, on the Tsar's monopoly of the trade in Siberian furs and caviar from Astrakhan, along with descriptions of Moscow, Siberia, and the steppe. He also details the Russian judiciary, complete with exile and torture, and Russian dress, pastimes, and food. Famously, a number of the illustrations (engravings in the English edition, here reproduced as woodcuts in text) are of mushrooms. This edition adds many charming, rather large figurative woodcut tail-pieces. The royal privilege printed here at the end of the prelims gives the publisher as Claude Barbin, and the present copy has a cancel title for Billaine (d.1681). The translator was Antoine des Barres, who appears also to have silently left out and added elements of his own to, as well as reordering, the text. Provenance: 'Ex libris C[om]te [d']Huc' (?) (early ink inscription to title). Physical description:Large 12mo (19.7 × 11.3 cm). pp. [10], 420, with woodcut illustrations in the text and many large woodcut tail-pieces. Entirely uncut in (near?) contemporary vellum-backed boards, flat spine with red morocco lettering-piece, ms. ink number at foot of spine. Condition:Binding a bit rubbed and stained, spine label chipped, short tear to upper board from the vellum under the paper; a3 and a4 transposed, a couple of closed tears incl. one horizontal across a leaf, another leaf with tear in blank margin, the odd mark or stain, occasional light browning or marginal dust-soiling; overall a very attractive example with wide margins, in its original condition exempt of restoration. Bibliography:Cat. Russica C-880. Cf. also for the original English edition: Cox I, 190 ("very entertaining account"); Cross, 'In the Lands of the Romanovs' A6; Cross, A. G. Leather. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. None (illustrator). First edition. A fascinating eighteenth century work on the managing of fruit-trees. The first edition of this particular work. With two folding plates in addition to numerous head pieces, tail pieces and decorative letters. Collated: Plate to page 60 is a facsimile as is the final leaf (pages 105-106). Otherwise, this work is complete. The title page states that this work is contrary to the views of 'Mr Lawrence and Others Upon Gardening'. It is very possible that the writing Collins is contrasting is Rev John Lawrence's The Clergy-Man's Recreation: Shewing the pleasure and profit of the Art of gardening from 1714. To the preface Collins notes that this publication was inspired by his reading of Lawrence's book and his disagreement with it. This work discusses border plants against walls, the choices of wall-trees, seasons for wall-fruit-trees, the planting, the seasonal pruning and more. Specific fruit trees include cherries, plums, pears, quinces and figs. There are also writings on pest-control such as preventing earwigs from damaging fruits. The growing of fruit trees in Britain dates back to ancient times due to their food producing qualities. For centuries fruit plants were regarded as ornamental and essential. This work provides a fascinating insight into what would become the popular walled gardens of the 18th century. A very scarce and important work, we know of only one sold in the last ten years. In a quarter calf binding with paper covered boards. This work has been rebound from original binding. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Title page is slightly age toned, with several chips to edges. Inscriptions to the title page of prior owner and the date of publication. Minor chips to the extremities of pages. Repair to page 103/104 at gutter, leaf has been re-pasted to another leaf in order to keep it bound in. The occasional spots to text. Very Good Indeed. book.

Drunk "very unhandsome" Circassian ladies and Russian mushrooms --- From the Tsar's character to Beluga caviar and Russian mushrooms: a wide-ranging, very personal and entertaining panorama of Russia before Peter the Great. First edition of one of the early European accounts of Russia, "one of the few English works [ ] based on actual knowledge of life in seventeenth-century Russia" (Cross). A doctor of medicine, trained at Cambridge and Oxford, Samuel Collins (1619-1670) was invited to Russia to work as a personal physician to tsar Alexis I, the father of Peter the Great, in 1660-66, and remained in Moscow until 1669. The notes he took during the stay, combined with the letters to his friend Robert Boyle, were published posthumously by an anonymous friend of his, in this 1671 first edition. This is Collins' only book, yet his name is not mentioned, with the sole reference being "Dr C." in the note "To the Reader". In the mid-19th century, Adelung erroneously claimed that the first edition of this book appeared in 1667; this error was repeated in many Russian studies, although the alleged 1667 edition is unknown to any Western European bibliographer, and it is logistically impossible "that the edition of 1671 could have been preceded by an earlier one" (Loewenson). As the tsar's physician, Collins was able to acquire information "not only of tsar Alexis himself, but also of prominent people at his court, and in the first place of the eminent statesman Ordyn-Nashchokin" (Loewenson). This lively account of his stay contains valuable and original information about the tsar's character and habits, the court life, judicial system (with a note on exiles and tortures), and several legends about tsar Ivan IV the Terrible. The book also includes sections detailing the tsar Alexis' exclusive control over Siberian fur and Astrakhan caviar trade, alongside depictions of Moscow, Siberia, the Caucasus, Crimea, and the steppe, joined by a separate and very unusual, "most interesting" (Whittaker) chapter on Russian mycology with two engravings of mushrooms. Famous for its highly personal, straightforward, and sometimes gruesome or caricatural style, Collins' book has sometimes been severely judged: "this book. suffered in part from the improbable anecdotes inserted for the entertainment of the reader, probably by the editors of the book" (ODNB). Other scholars however state the opposite: Collins "has some curious remarks about the life and manners of the 17th century, which are confirmed in Russian folklore [.] His information is quite peculiar and, to the author's credit, does not contain fantastical anecdotes" (Shokarev, our translation): he leaves insightful details about Russian peoples' everyday life, clothes, food, strong inclination to drinking, music and customs, mentioning wedding and funeral rites, and the festivals and traditions of the Orthodox year. The doctor's observations also address local sanitary conditions and the spread of diseases - at the same time approving the execution of money forgers by pouring molten tin into the mouth, and the burying alive of women who murder their husbands. The last 8 pages are a bookseller's catalogue of D. Newman. The seven copper engravings include a portrait of tsar Alexis as a young man, which "may have been taken from life and therefore may be among the earliest depictions of a Russia head of state" (Whittaker). They also show a fantastical-looking Russian five-domed Church with semiclassical lower tiers, a similarly styled bell tower of the Moscow Kremlin, Orthodox ways of blessing, and Slavonic alphabet. The anonymous French edition that followed (Paris, 1679) had these plates in woodcuts; the first Russian translation (from French) appeared only in excerpts in Russkii vestnik [Russian Messenger] in 1841 since the book, often negative about Russians, was banned before that. A separate edition with the entire text translated appeared in 1846. Not to confuse this Samuel Collins with his two contemporaries: Samuel Collins (1618 1710), a personal physician to Charles II of England and author of A System of Anatomy, and Samuel Collins (1617 1685), a physician and registrar at Oxford University. Provenance: Prof. Philip Longworth (1933-2021, historian and writer, esp. on Russian history). Physical description:Engraved portrait frontispiece, title, [iv] 'To the Reader', [xvi] detailed table of contents, 141, and [x] pp. postface and publisher's catalogue, with 6 engraved plates. Contemporary mottled calf. Condition:Rebacked to style with spine with raised bands, gilt in compartments, red label lettered in gilt; frontispiece with lower left corner torn away and repaired, not affecting text or image, postface leaf a bit frayed at lower edge, small recent pencil markings in blank margins, a couple of old ink annotations, incl. one to title giving the author's name.
