Leatherbound. Zustand: Very good. 2 vols. xxiii, 335, xii, 313 p. Irregularities in paging. 18 cm. Head and tail-pieces. Full leather. Some wear to edges, a few small scrapes and cracks, corners bumped. Bookplate on front pastedown endpaper says "A. Sword of Bothwellshields." Owner's signature from 1836 on front free endpaper, rear endpaper torn in vol. 2. Pages clean. Pepys speaks of Lord Vaughan as "one of the lewdest fellows of the age, worse than Sir Charles Sedley" (DNB). That was saying a great deal, for some of Sedley's poetry is raunchy indeed. The 5th Baronet, Sir Charles Sedley (1639-1701) was a politican, dramatist and famed wit of his day. His poetry explores both satrie and amorous topics. Works in these two volumes: The Happy Pair; Antony and Cleopatra, a Tragedy; Teh Mulberry Garden, a comedy; Venus and Adonis; Bellamira; The Grumbler; The Tyrant King of Crete; and Memoirs of the Authors Wife.

8vo, pp. [x], 19-23, [1]; [viii], 224; 178; contemporary panelled calf (joints rubbed, spine a bit worn, label defective). 'Second edition', but in fact a re-issue of the sheets of the 1707 edition, with a cancel title-page. The Earl of Rochester's speech, as noted on the new title, has been added to the preliminaries, between Capt. Ayloffe's preface and the table of contents, though the pagination suggests that it was originally intended to follow the table of contents. In addition, the last leaf of the second section has been cancelled, and replaced by two leaves so as to include a speech by the Earl of Salisbury. Foxon p. 710; Case 243 (b). Provenance. Early armorial Jolliffe bookplate.

8vo, pp. [xvi], 224; 175, [1] advertisements; contemporary panelled calf, the central panels decorated with a black stencil, spine gilt (joints restored, later brown morocco label). First edition thus: a new version of Sedley's Miscellaneous Works, published five years earlier. All the poems in the earlier collection are reprinted here, along with an additional selection of verse (pp. 137-208), including seven further poems by Sedley, and more than thirty by his contemporaries; most of the new pieces are presented simply as 'by another hand', but there are also poems identified as by Nicholas Brady, Samuel Butler, and Joseph Addison. The tragedy on the death of Mark Antony in the earlier volume has been replaced by a substantial selection of Parliamentary speeches. Foxon, p. 710; Case 243.

Erstausgabe
Two volumes, octavo, frontispiece portrait; blue morocco gilt, by Smith. First edition thus: expanded from an edition of 1702, it has been conjectured (probably unsubstantially) that this edition was prepared by Defoe. Dashing, profligate and witty, Sedley was a favourite of Charles II. He 'gained a deserved reputation . for a certain poetic gift' (Brittanica). .
