Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. "Much has been written about the heroic figures of Sophocles' dramas. Here Charles Segal focuses not on individual heroes and heroines, but on the world that inspired and motivated their actions - a universe of family, city, nature, and the supernatural. In a series of interconnected essays, Segal studies five of Sophocles' seven extant plays: "Ajax", "Oedipus" "Tyrannus", "Philocletes", "Antigone", and "Trachinian Women". His analysis sheds light on these plays and on their implications for Greek views on the gods, moral life and sexuality" (Publisher).

Buch
Zustand: Gut. S. 235-253. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, paper slightly browned, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: Too often students of Horace are given facile generalizations about the poet's charm, skill with words, or stately rhythms. These are all important aspects of the Horatian art of the callida iunctura. But we sometimes fail to bring out that Horace is also a poet of a rich and suggestive imagination. Odes 2.6 is a useful example of how suggestive Horatian lyric can be. It belongs to a number of odes which reflect on the relations between poetry, nature, and human life; and, like several other odes, it uses a tension between Greek and Italian settings to frame a deeper tension between ideality and reality. For all these reasons it is of special interest. Yet C. 2.6 has been rather neglected, perhaps because it has been overshadowed by its biographically more interesting companion-piece, 2.7, and perhaps also because its subtle organization and density of suggestiveness have been less congenial to earlier critics. - Wikipedia: Charles Paul Segal (March 19, 1936 January 1, 2002) was an American classicist renowned for his application of critical theory to ancient texts. Although his work spanned a variety of Latin and Greek genres, he is best known for his work on Greek tragedy. His most influential work is Tragedy and Civilization: an Interpretation of Sophocles (1981), in which he presents a structuralist approach to Greek theatre. Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 336-349. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise good and very clean. - From the text: Near the end of the first book of the Aeneid the bard lopas entertains the guests at Dido's banquet (i, 7406): cithara crinitus lopas personal aurata docuit quem maximus Atlas, hie canit errantem lunam solisque labores, unde hominum genus et pecudes unde imber et ignes, Ar durum pluviasque Hyadas geminosque Triones; quid tantum Oceano properent se tingere soles hiberni vet quae tardis mora noctibus obstet. - The moment is important. An atmosphere of suspense and expectation has been created. The machinations of Venus, the presence of Amor, the ominously suggestive gifts (64855), the foreshadowing of Dido's tragedy (71722), the silence in the halls (730) as Dido speaks (7315), the solemn libations which immediately precede the song (73640), and the high style throughout this section of the narrative all reinforce the impression that we have to do here with a point of heightened intensity and not just a gratuitous and insignificant detail. The asyndeton in 740 and the alliterative and assonantal juxtaposition of suggestive words at the beginning of the song (cithara crinitus lopas / personal aurata) make it stand out even more strikingly. - Wikipedia: Charles Paul Segal (March 19, 1936 January 1, 2002) was an American classicist renowned for his application of critical theory to ancient texts. Zustand: Gut. pp. 164-169. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the reviewer. - Reviewer's name underlined on cover, otherwise clean. - From the text: At least three major steps toward a valid reading of Latin poetry are made in this very important work: (1) it stresses the all-pervasive importance of literary conventions in Roman poetry, even in ostensibly personal poems like those of Catullus or Eclogues 1 and 9; (2) it shows the tendency throughout Latin poetry, but dominant in the Augustan period, to blend reality and imagination, myth and history, into a complex literary construct; and (3) it undermines the mistaken notion that a poem ought to have the same kind of immediate intelligibility as a piece of expository prose. Williams thus once more decapitates the hydras (and we hope has finally cauterized the wounds) of the biographical, historical, and prosaic fallacies which still beset Classical literary criticism. - Wikipedia: Charles Paul Segal (March 19, 1936 January 1, 2002) was an American classicist renowned for his application of critical theory to ancient texts.
