Dated from the same copies on Jisc c1886.A special limited edition prepared for Subscription only.Three of six volumes; the first two volumes being Comedies, such as 'The Tempest,' 'The Two Gentlemen of Verona,' 'The Merry Wives of Windsor,' 'A Midsummer Night's Dream,' 'As You Like It,' 'The Winter's Tale,' and many others. Volume one with a preface, the life of William Shakespeare, and Shakespeare's will; volume three containing Shakespeare's historical plays, naming 'King John, ' 'King Richard II,' 'King Henry IV' in two parts, and 'King Henry V.'William Shakespeare is regarded to this day as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's greatest dramatist; he is known as England's national poet and "the Bard of Avon." His plays have been translated in every major language, and performed a great amount. His works are studied and reinterpreted constantly. Collating complete with six photogravure per volume and various full wood illustrations, as well as plenty of illustrations in text throughout. Illustrated by H. C. Selous. In the original publisher's cloth binding, with illustrated stamp in gilt and titles in gilt to the front board and spine. Externally, smart with only minor shelfwear and slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine and the extremities. The spine has slightly darkened. Damp marking to the front and rear boards. Internally, firmly bound, only one plate loose but present to volume one, illustrating 'Bottom as Pyramus plate', and the frontispiece to volume one is coming loose. Minor faint spotting to the occasional leaf, particularly to the first and last few, otherwise pages are generally bright and clean throughout. Collating complete with six photogravure per volume and various full wood illustrations, as well as plenty of illustrations in text throughout. Illustrated by H. C. Selous. Good. book.

An attractive leather bound copy of the complete works of Shakespeare, edited by Charles and Mary Charles Cowden Clarke. Both Charles and Mary are best known for their works on Shakespeare, and the former delivered important lectures on the Elizabethan playwright between 1834 and 1856. The present work includes the plays and sonnets of Shakespeare, as well as his poems The Lover's Complaint, The Passionate Pilgrim, and the Phoenix and the Turtle. There is evidence that a bookplate has been removed from the front pastedown. In a full red calf binding. Externally, very smart. Very lightly rubbed to the boards and the joints. The calf is lightly worn to the tail of the spine. The rear hinge is starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Aside from some light foxing to the front and rear of the volume, pages are bright and clean. Very Good. book.

The odd spot to the pages, heavier to the front and rear. Slight creasing to a few of the pages. Age toning to the top edge. Very Good. book.

Gilt decorated red publisher's leather with raised bands and gilt lettering and decoration to the spines; marbled endpapers, gilt-decorated turn-ins and a.e.g. Rubbing to extremities, with very slight scratching to boards. Two ink inscriptions, with dates of 1880 and 1966 to prelims. Foxing scattered throughout both volumes. Mary Cowden Clarke was a compiler of a concordance to Shakespeare and her husband Charles gave a series of lectures on the playwright. Large 8vo.

Gilt titles, tooling, and raised bands to spine. Gilt dentelles to turn-ins. All edges gilt. Blue and white marbled endpapers. Lightly spotted throughout, most heavily to preliminaries, rear blanks, and endpapers. Some offsetting from portrait. Front flyleaf cancelled. Single white mark to top edge. Gentle scuffing to boards, sunning to spine, rubbing to joints, raised bands, and extremities. Very good. A fine leather-bound tome of the Bard's work.

Light toning with some spotting to first and final leaves of each volume. Heavy pencil ownership to first blank of each volume. Spines sunned with a little light wear and bumping to bindings. A lovely near fine set.
