Bodenheimer, David J., and Randall T. Shepard, Editors. The History of Indiana Law. Athens, OH: Ohio University Press, [2006]. xi, 391 pp. Original blue cloth hardcover, with gilt stamped spine and front cover, in a new dust jacket. New. $45. * A title in the series Law, Society, and Politics in the Midwest. Long regarded as a center for middle-American values, Indiana is also a cultural crossroads that has produced a rich and complex legal and constitutional heritage. The History of Indiana Law traces this history through a series of expert articles by identifying the themes that mark the state's legal development and establish its place within the broader context of the Midwest and nation. The History of Indiana Law explores the ways in which the state's legal culture responded to and at times resisted the influence of national legal developments, including the tortured history of race relations in Indiana.

Paperback. Zustand: Fine. First Edition. Card Covers. 8vo. pp. 24. Original publisher's green card covers lettered black on upper cover. Together with two typed signed letters and one handwritten signed letter loosely inserted from David Boadella, (born 1931) the psychotherapist, biosynthesist and writer on Wilhelm Reich to Leslie Shepard (1917-2004), the authority on street literature, early cinema, Dracula and the paranormal. The first typed on headed notepaper from Energy and Character, Journal of Bio-energetic Research, Abbotsbury, Dorset of which Boadella was editor dated Oct. 26th 1969 and consisting of about 340 words in which he says he would like to publish the article concerning Reich's orgone experimentation 'whether or not you took note of any of my quibbles'. He continues by discussing a possible lecture course and will draw up a rough list of themes but at this stage no commitment would be required. He ends by saying Shepard's original ballad book is everywhere, 'my student teachers arrive on school practice with it tucked under their arm (well the last one did, anyway).' The second a handwritten signed letter from Boadella to Leslie Shepard addressed from Abbotsbury dated 24 March no year noted and consisting of about 234 words in which he mentions Bose (presumably the Indian nationalist S. C. Bose) who he agrees was ahead of his time and is critical of Harold Streitfeld's Diane? Streitfeld was a psychologist who ran Orion which was modelled after Esalen. Boadella then says, 'Quite honestly anyone who works with emotional energies, or music, or poetry is involved with the religious dimension, whether they know it or not, except for the gimmick boys.' He goes on to say 'As for L. Ron Hubbard I declared myself a long time ago as finding him an all out charlatan.' Finally a longer typed signed letter (two pages in length) with handwritten 'Abbotsbury April 15th' at top in which Boadella partly responds to Shepard's previous unknown criticisms of some therapists and describes his marvellous week in Mexico at a conference organised by Alexander Lowen. He says he talked with Stanley Keleman in Mexico about Esalen and the group encounter phenomenon (Keleman was a therapist who created the body psychotherapy approach) also referring to him as a master-therapist. He also met John Pierrakos and says, 'He is a sensitive and intelligent therapist with a keen and genuine interest in the spiritual dimension.' He then considers the problems of reporting on group therapy experiences even referring to an article by Leslie Shepard on lay therapy. He says 'the imputation of arrogance must be attributed to Anne Faraday or to Musgrove, not to Pierrakos who is by no means a showman or a cheapjack.' He thinks Shepard's 'Brinton piece goes off at a tangent.' He says Brinton (Maurice Brinton born Christopher Agamemnon Pallis, neurologist and revolutionary socialist writer and translator) has good social aims and that he works in the Solidarity movement. 'I have met him, and he is neither a drop-out, nor a student, nor a provocateur.' About the Journal he says he tries to provide a range of attitudes but, 'You find me too left wing and open-ended. Others criticise me for publishing articles (e.g. Bellis) suggesting that group therapy might be "dangerous" or needs careful leadership. Some people find the whole thing too respectable and right-wing.' Finally he says he has finished his Reich book. In addition, half a page of typed notes on mysticism loosely inserted. About fine. About fine.

Erstausgabe
First edition, first printing. Inscribed by the author. Publisher's original blue cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. Illustrated with 15 full page plates in black and white and colour by David Shepard. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth bright and fresh. The contents with the bookplate of the RAF pilot and aviation author Derek Mason to the front pastedown are clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the bright, lightly rubbed and nicked price-clipped dustwrapper that is otherwise without loss. A very attractive example. Inscribed by the World War II flying ace author in blue ink on the front endpaper "Derek / with all good wishes / Johnnie Johnson / 27 July 1972". Air Vice-Marshal "Johnnie" Johnson flew nearly 700 Spitfire combat missions during the 1939-45 War, from the end of the Battle of Britain to the defeat of Germany in 1945, a record matched by few other Allied Pilots. Possessing tactical experience and displaying leadership of a high order, Johnson received a Squadron Command in 1942 and went on to prove himself the equal of his mentor Douglas Bader as one of the four great Allied Wing Leaders of the War. His aggressive leadership of the Kenley based Canadian Spitfire Wing saw his personal tally rocket to 25 victories during a few hectic months. After a short rest from operations, he returned to the fray in 1944 to lead No. 144 Canadian Wing into Europe. On D-Day+2 the Wing became the first R.A.F. unit to operate from France since June 1940. He subsequently led 127 and 125 Wings with high success in battles for local air superiority over North-East France and Germany. In a Fighter-Bomber role, his operations contributed to the destruction of the Seventh German Army in the Falaise Gap. Famously Johnson was the Royal Air Force's officially recognised top-scoring Fighter Pilot of the War with 38 confirmed victories.
