Southey was an English poet of the Romantic school, one of the so-called "Lake Poets," and Poet Laureate for 30 years from 1813 to his death in 1843. He was also a voluminous letter writer to various individuals as this collection indicates.

The second edition of this four-volume work in the publisher's original cloth bindings. The commonplace book of Robert Southey, edited by his son-in-law John Wood Carter. Southey was a Romantic poet, alongside his fellow Lake Poets Wordsworth and Coleridge. He held the title of Poet Laureate from 1813 to 1843, a popular poet of the Georgian era. These "commonplace" volumes contain passages reflecting on a variety on subjects, showing Southey's interest in a wide range of topics, and the ways in which he wished to educate himself.The First Series is comprised of 'Choice Passages', with a range of moral, religious, political, and philosophical content; the Second Series covers 'Special Collections'; the Third Series contains 'Analytical Readings', including historical essays; and the Fourth Series includes 'Original Memoranda'. In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally smart, though faded to the spines with a little bumping to the extremities. Remnants of a bookplate to the paste downs of all volumes. Front hinge starting to Volume I. Rear hinge starting to Volume III. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd spot. Very Good. book.
