Disbound. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). First edition. A first edition of Charles Stanhope's analysis of the prime minister's plans to tackle the national debt. An uncommon work. In this uncommon essay, Charles Stanhope discusses the Prime Minister's methods of reducing the national debt. Due to the American War of Independence, the national debt had doubled to £242 million, and Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger proposed several successful plans to lower the national debt, including imposing new taxes, and instituting a sinking fund that could accumulate interest that could then be used to pay off the national debt. By 1972, the debt had fallen to £170 million. In the present volume, Charles Stanhope, who was in fact the brother-in-law to the prime minister, offers his observations on Pitt's proposed methods of reducing the national debt. Disbound, with some remnants of the original card to the spine. Externally, generally smart, with just some light spotting to the outer papers. Internally, firmly bound, pages are generally bright and clean with the occasional spot. Very Good. book.

First editions, rare in the original cloth. Together, these two works represent the only full-length eyewitness accounts of the extraordinary traveller Lady Stanhope, who was the first authorized archaeological excavator of the Holy Land. Written by her travelling physician, they have never been superseded as the chief biographical authorities of a remarkable career. Lady Stanhope (1776-1839), a niece and hostess of the younger Pitt, left England in 1810 with her physician and future biographer Charles Meryon (1783-1877). Accompanied by Stanhope's love affair Michael Bruce, they travelled via Malta to Constantinople and thence to Egypt, where Stanhope was received with honours and pageantry by Muhammad 'Ali Pasha. Afterwards, she toured the Holy Land and entered Palmyra at the head of a cavalcade of Bedouin and had herself crowned as Queen of the Desert. "Unveiled, tall, and impressive in her Turkish male clothes she entered [Damascus] on horseback and made a great sensation. She travelled in style, made lavish gifts to pashas and others in authority, and arrogated to herself the right to do very much as she pleased" (ODNB). She dismissed her partner Bruce in 1813 and moved into a former convent in the foothills of Sidon, Lebanon, and then to Dar Jun, a remote spot high in the Lebanese mountains. She became the first approved archaeological excavator of Palestine in 1815 after declaring to the Ottoman authorities that a medieval Italian manuscript had revealed to her the location of three million gold coins buried among the ruins of Ashkelon. "In what might be rightfully called the first stratigraphical analysis of an archaeological site" (Silberman), Stanhope discovered not coins but rather a large marble statue which she ordered be destroyed in a supposed demonstration of her loyalty to the Ottomans. Her expedition paved the way for future excavations and tourism at the site. Meryon returned to England in 1817 but visited Stanhope again in 1819, 1830, and 1837, receiving instructions on this last occasion to petition the British government for the reinstatement of her pension. As Stanhope's health failed and finances declined, "her native servants and European attendants left one by one [and] when there was no one left to clean up her squalor and care for her, she walled herself up in Dar Jun and died, alone" (Robinson). Preserving the details of her life, these works describe "with utmost minuteness her complicated oriental environment, her tyranny, and her interminable conversations. with an almost Boswellian power of self-effacement" (DNB). Arcadian Library 8517 and pp. 100-1; Blackmer 1117; Robinson, pp. 57-8. Neil Asher Silberman, "Restoring the Reputation of Lady Hester Lucy Stanhope", BAR, vol. 10, no. 4, July-Aug. 1984. Two works in Six volumes, large duodecimo. Original red cloth, spines lettered in gilt and decorated in blind, covers panelled in blind, yellow coated endpapers, edges untrimmed. Lithographic frontispiece in each volume, hand-coloured in Memoirs vol. 1 as issued, folding plan, wood engravings in the text. Publisher's catalogue bound at end of 4 vols. Cloth variably darkened, gilt bright, occasional slight wear, top edges dust-toned, initial volume of both works with discreet repairs to spines, paper repair to front inner hinge of Travels, a few gatherings slightly proud, loss to fore margin of Memoirs vol. 3 sig. K1, not affecting text. A very good set.

First Edition. 3 vols, 12mo, pp.I: xvii, [3], 394, II: vi, 384, III: vii, [1], 361, [1], with a lithographed frontispiece in each volume (the portrait of Stanhope in volume I hand-coloured), each with tissue guard, one lithographed folding plan of Stanhope's 'Residence at Joon'; some scattered foxing but a good set, edges untrimmed, in contemporary half green roan with marbled sides, large printed label to upper board of vol.III of Harvey's Library, Sidmouth, the spines also thus stamped and numbered (labels removed from the other boards, and from endpapers).First edition, the entertaining memoirs of the Middle East traveller Lady Hester Stanhope (1776 1839). Having looked after her uncle, William Pitt, during most of her youth and run his household while he was Prime Minister for the second time, Stanhope left for the Levant in 1810. She took with her a companion, Miss Williams, and her physician, Charles Meryon, who attended her for the first seven years and later revisited her on three occasions in 1819, 1830, and 1837-8. 'After a couple of months in Malta, a year in and about Constantinople, and a shipwreck off Rhodes, Hester and Michael [Bruce, with whom she had begun an affair in Malta] reached Cairo, where Mehmet Ali Pasha received them with honours and pageantry. A tour in the Holy Land and Lebanon followed' (ODNB). She entered Damascus on horseback in male Turkish clothes, making a great sensation, then became the first European woman to visit Palmyra, in the company of the Bedouins. In 1814 she settled at Mar Elias, and then after few years, increasingly in debt and increasingly eccentric, 'she moved to Dar Jun, a more remote spot higher in the hills, where she repaired an old building, added others, laid out gardens, and surrounded the whole with a wall. Here she lived with an unruly household of some thirty servants and slaves for the rest of her life.' She conceived a violent aversion to England, barely leaving the compound, but would talk late into the night with her few visitors, including Meryon; she died, having dismissed most of her servants, in June 1839. In the Memoirs, Meryon 'described with the utmost minuteness her complicated living arrangements, her tyranny, and her interminable conversations and cross-questionings, of which he himself was often a victim' (ibid.). Harvey's Library, on Fore-Street, Sidmouth, was a subscription library on three-day terms. Harvey also offered 'Books and Music, or any other Article whatever, procured to order, from London', periodicals, printing, and bookbinding, and 'fancy stationary [sic]'. Language: English.
