Comprised of the 2nd and the 4th Hour volumes of The Children's Play-Hour Book collection, edited and compiled by British writer Stephen Southwold. The Children's Play-Hour Book was a collection of poems, stories, puzzles, games, riddles and fables written by a number of writers for the entertainment of children. In these particular works, the contributing writers include Eleanor Farjeon, Marion St. John Webb, Sir Henry Newbolt, H. G. Wells and Walter de la Mare, amongst others.Illustrated with eight colour plates to each volume, most of which are tipped-in. Collated, complete. With numerous other vignettes throughout. In the publisher's original hard back binding, with the original, unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, very smart, with light bumping to the extremities and to the head and tail of the spine. Light fading and a touch of discolouration, moreso the the 2nd hour. The odd mark. 2nd hour lacking 'This book belongs to.' page, after front endpaper. Dust wrapper's are smart, with slight edge wear and the odd closed tear, with one or two chips to the 4th hour. Slight sunning to the spines and extremities of the wraps. The odd mark and light discolouration to wraps. Scattered spotting to the reverse of the wraps. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with the odd mark. Very Good Indeed. book.

A very scarce copy of this charming collection of short stories for children by Stephen Southwold, copiously illustrated throughout with beautiful black and white illustrations by Marion Board A first edition copy. Stephen Southwold was prolific British writer, who was born Stephen Henry Critten but wrote under a number of pseudonyms throughout his literary career, eventually changing his name to one of them, Stephen Southwold. Whilst Southwold first became well known for his numerous science fiction works, he also published 'conventional' novels and a large number of short stories, Indeed, these storied for children were at first exclusively written under his pseudonym 'Stephen Southwold'. In a red cloth binding with pictorial black stamping to the front board. Externally, slightly faded to spine. Small tidemark to tail of gutter to frontboard. Minor shelfwear to extremities. Internally fimrly bound. Pages very bright and clean throughout. SLight offsetting to half title page. Small closed tear to lower extremity of page 17/18. Very Good Indeed. book.
