8vo bifolia (180 x 113 mm and 178 x 114mm respectively), pp. [5]; sometime folded, some light soiling, in very good condition. In the first, brief, letter, written from Rayleigh's home at Witham in Essex and dated 19 June 1916, Rayleigh agrees to forward a paper to the Royal Society: 'I will gladly communicate Mr White's paper to R. S. The extension of what I did is interesting, and he points out a stupid mistake of mine w[hic]h might easily have led me into more trouble than it did'. 'Mr White' is perhaps the American mathematician Henry Seely White (1861 1943).The second letter, dated 7 March 1917, is written on paper headed '4, Carlton Gardens, Pall Mall, S.W.', the home of Rayleigh's brother-in-law (and former prime minister) Arthur Balfour. Rayleigh thanks Bromwich for his 'reprint' (probably an offprint of a paper), writing: 'On a short perusal I can see that it contains much that I ought to know, but to appreciate it properly will deprive more time than I have to dispose of at present. I am particularly glad to notice your appreciation of Heaviside, to whom I hope you will send a copy. When I was Sec. R. S. one of his papers was passed over for publication on the concordant reports of two mathematicians & it has always been upon my mind that the decision was probably wrong'.Rayleigh is here referring to the physicist and electrical engineer Oliver Heaviside (1850 1925), whose 'operational calculus' for solving differential equations 'attracted a following among physicists and engineers, but pure mathematicians criticized the method as unrigorous and blocked theRoyal Societyfrom publishing one of his papers on the subject in 1894. Incensed,Heavisidelaunched caustic attacks on "mathematicians of the Cambridge or conservatory kind, who look the gift-horse in the mouth and shake their heads with solemn smile" ' (ODNB).The mathematician Thomas John I'Anson Bromwich (1875 1929) was a vice president of the Royal Society in 1919 and 1920. It was Bromwich who, in a series of papers beginning in 1916, indicated howHeaviside's calculus could be developed in a manner acceptable to pure mathematicians by treating his operators as contour integrals. It is to one of these papers that Rayleigh's second letter undoubtedly refers. Language: English.

In: Proceedings of the Cambridge Philosophical Society, Vol. V, October 29, 1883 - May 24, 1886; Vol. VI, October 25, 1886 - June 3, 1889. Cambridge:: University Press, 1886-1889., 1886. Quarter navy morocco, morocco corners, marbled boards, raised bands, gilt spine; spine lightly faded. Blind stamp of the Carnegie Institution, Washington. Fine. FIRST EDITIONS. Lord Rayleigh succeeded James Clerk Maxwell as Cavendish professor of experimental physics at Cambridge in December 1879, where he remained until 1884. He placed laboratory instruction in elementary physics on a firm basis. This was a revolutionary accomplishment in England, and the influence of Rayleigh's pioneer efforts was ultimately felt in higher educational institutions throughout the country. A rather elaborate research program was also set up with the help of his assistants Glazebrook and Shaw, both of whom later became scientists of note. This program involved the re-determination of three electrical standards: the ohm, the ampere, and the volt. Work of this sort had already been started by Maxwell for the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Rayleigh's continuation and development demanded the construction of more precise equipment than Maxwell's, as well as meticulous care and patience in its use. When the investigation was completed in 1884, the results stood the test of time remarkably well. The realization of the importance of standards in physical measurements that this work implied undoubtedly influenced Rayleigh favorably toward the establishment of a government standards laboratory in Britain, which eventually (1900) took the form of the National Physical Laboratory at Teddington, Middlesex." DSB. In all, these two volumes contain 11 papers by Rayleigh, Richard Tetley Glazebrook (1854-1935), and William Napier Shaw (1854-1945). DNB, 1912-1921, pp. 514-517; DSB, XIII, p. 102.

Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge. 1033. 4to. (321 x 240 mm) [4], 43 pp. 5 text figs. Original gilt- and blind-stamped green cloth. Bookplate of Andras Gedeon. Fine. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF THE DISCOVERY OF ARGON. Argon was the first of the inert gases to be discovered and both Rayleigh and Ramsay claimed to be the first to identify it, eventually agreeing to submit a joint paper. It was largely a result of this work that won Rayleigh the Nobel Prize for Physics and Ramsay the prize for chemistry in 1904. Ramsay later went on to identify and isolate helium, krypton, neon and xenon. "Rayleigh and Ramsey [sic] had noted that nitrogen obtained from the air had a density greater than that of nitrogen liberated from its compounds by about one-half percent. This led to the isolation of the first of the inert gases which they called argon. In the following year Ramsay found another, helium, in the mineral clevite, altho this had been noted in the sun's spectrum by Lockyar [sic] in 1868. In four years, 1894-8, five new gases, including neon, krypton and xenon had been discovered. These form a distinct group in the periodic table; all have zero valency." [Dibner]. A revised version of this work had been published in the Philosophical Transactions a year earlier ("a curious instance of a revision appearing before the original work"). [Norman]. Dibner, Heralds of science 50; DSB Vol. XIII, pp. 100-103; Norman 2029.
