Title printed in red and black, with large woodcut printer's device. [32] ll., 735, [1] pp. 1 vols. Folio. The first edition of the writings of this early Christian father (c. 160 - c. 220 AD) was printed by Froben in Basel, 1521, edited by Beatus Rhenanus. This edition is a reprint of the significantly improved edition of 1664, edited by Nicolaus Rigaltius with notes by Priorius, but with the addition of the spurious poem "Jona et Ninive" -- and "plus belle" than its predecessor, according to Brunet. Brunet V 728-729 ("Cette édition est plus belle et plus correcte que celle de Paris, 1664); Graesse VI/II, 70 ("Voici la meilleure et la plus complète édition des oeuvres de Tertullian .") Contmporary calf, binding worn; joints cracked, spine bands a bit chipped and rubbed, covers scuffed, but cords holding firm; internally, a very good copy. Front free endpaper with ownership inscription of WILLIAM JOHN COPELAND (1804-1885), historian and Church of England clergyman active in the Oxford movement, dated March, 1836; with note by later owner, American clergyman William Samuel Bishop. Institutional bookplate Title printed in red and black, with large woodcut printer's device. [32] ll., 735, [1] pp. 1 vols. Folio.
