First edition, later printing of this popular Dr. Seuss work. Quarto, original pictorial boards, pictorial endpapers, illustrated. Near fine in a very good third issue dust jacket with the 250/250 price and Horton's partial ear on the rear panel. Neat gift inscription to the front free endpaper, "To Meg Christmas 1960." Dr. Seuss began work on Horton Hears a Who! in the fall of 1953. The book's main theme, "a person's a person no matter how small", was Geisel's reaction to his visit to Japan, where the importance of the individual was an exciting new concept. Geisel, who had harbored strong anti-Japan sentiments before and during World War II, changed his views dramatically after the war and used this book as an allegory for the American post-war occupation of the country. It was adapted to film in 2008, the cast included Jim Carrey and Steve Carell.

In the illustrated dust jacket, with rubbing to the edges and folds, and occasional small closed tears and chipped to the edges, one of which has been backed with tape (a 1 1/2" closed tear at the head of the spine). Despite these flaws, the jacket is quite attractive. The price on the dust jacket is $2.50. No price listed for "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street" on the rear inside flap. Early printing of Dr. Seuss's second book.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: good. Mixed state, folio size, 47 pp., with dust jacket. "The first hat was old and battered, but it had a fine feather stuck in it of which any little boy would be proud." A favourite Dr. Seuss story, which, of course, "turned out very happily" (n.b., quotes from dust jacket flap). This volume a mixed state: the hill is in one continuous line spanning the pages (first issue) instead of a broken line and has the correct prices on the jacket flaps. However, the endpapers are not the first issue, which have the large hats on the pastedowns and the small hats on the free endpapers; this copy has the small hats on the pastedowns and the large hats on the free endpapers. ___DESCRIPTION: Red cloth spine, the boards covered with flat paper in black, red, and white, pictorial endpapers in red depicting a swarm of hats, the title page with a small illustration of the hat, illustrated throughout in red and black; folio size (12" by 9 1/8"), unpaginated with the title (and copyright) pages plus 45 pages of text. The dust jacket with a large picture of Bartholomew holding two hats with white and black lettering, the front flap with a summary of the book and the correct first edition price of $1.50, rear flap with review blurbs and "Mulberry Street - $1.00" at the bottom, back panel with a single hat. ___CONDITION: Overall a very good book, the boards clean, a strong text block with solid hinges, the interior pages clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; a bit of rubbing to the corners and the bottom edges of the boards, a shallow vertical crease showing on both boards, some dustiness and light sunning to the head and tail of the spine, offsetting to the endpapers, and the text block slightly cocked. The jacket is good only, with light overall wear to the panels and flaps, a water ring on the back panel, considerable wear to the spine with a chip at the bottom approx. two inches, a prior owner affixed cello tape to the jacket verso above the chip where there were closed tears, the same at the head of the spine; we assume the same prior owner attempted to colour some of the white paper along the joints in a red colour which does not exactly match the red of the paper jacket. ___CITATION: Younger & Hirsch no. 22. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Early printing of the sequel of Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat. Octavo, original illustrated boards, pictorial endpapers. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author opposite the title page, "For Aaron Samuel congratulations and Best Wishes! Dr. Seuss." Near fine in a good dust jacket with rubbing and wear. The year after Theodore Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, broke new ground in childrenâ s books with The Cat in the Hat, he brought back the immediately popular characterâ "with 26 little cats under his red-and-white stovepipe, not to mention the mysterious â Voomâ â "for a new madcap adventure. The title was the second from Beginner Books, Geiselâ s own imprint at Random House; in very little time, as that lineâ s identifying logo, â the Catâ s image would become synonymous with learning to readâ (Cohen, 324).

First edition with the 250/250 price on the front flap as well as the $2.50 price added to the rear flap (state 'c') of the first Dr. Seuss title to feature full-color art on every other page. Quarto, original cloth, pictorial endpapers, illustrated throughout. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author, "For Mrs. Haye with very kindest regards- Dr. Seuss." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing and wear. Uncommon signed and inscribed. The story begins as a boy named Marco fishes in a small, trash-filled pond, McElligot's Pool. A local farmer laughs at the boy and tells him that he is never going to catch anything. Nevertheless, Marco holds out hope and begins to imagine a scenario in which he might be able to catch a fish. First, he suggests that the pool might be fed by an underground brook that travels under a highway and a hotel to reach the sea. Marco then imagines a succession of fish and other creatures that could be in the sea and therefore the pool. He imagines, among others, a fish with a checkerboard stomach, a seahorse with the head of an actual horse, and an eel with two heads. When Marco is done imagining, he tells the farmer, "Oh, the sea is a so full of a number of fish,/ If a fellow is patient, he might get his wish!" Geisel painted some of the water colors that illustrate McElligot's Pool while vacationing with his wife, Helen, at the summer home of their friend Kelvin Vanderlip, in southern California. The book was the first Dr. Seuss book to use water colors for its illustrations; however, because of budget concerns, Random House published half of the book in black and white, alternating between two pages in color and two pages in black and white. It became a Junior Literary Guild selection and garnered Dr. Seuss his first Caldecott Honor.

All issue points present: price of 200/200 on the dust jacket, no mention of the â Beginner Booksâ series on the rear panel, and has four paragraphs of educatorâ s reviews on rear panel. Book contains a single signature and 61 pages with a message on final page before end paper contained in an outline of the catâ s hat & head. Boldly signed by Dr. Seuss opposite the title page. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light wear. An exceptional example. "A person's a person, no matter how small," Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, would say. "Children want the same things we want. To laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained and delighted." "The Cat in the Hat was so successful that Random House, publisher of all the Dr. Seuss books since 1937, created a special division, Beginner Books, with the Cat in the Hat as the logo and Dr. Seuss as president of the division" (Dr. Seuss from Then to Now, 45). "This extraordinary writer has done more to foster literacy in children than most because he manages to combine lunacy with sanity, fun with learning, and quality with exuberant readability" (Joseph Connolly). It was the basis for the 2003 film starring Mike Myers in the title role of the Cat in the Hat, and Dakota Fanning as Sally.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: very good. First Edition. First printing, quarto size, [55 pp.], with publisher's dust jacket. Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904-1991) will forever be remembered as the beloved "Dr. Seuss", creator of numerous stories for children. Often written as nonsensical lines in the tradition of the great Edward Lear, his stories resonate with both children and adults. The recipient of numerous awards and accolades, he won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1958 for this book, "Horton Hatches the Egg". When asked by Mayzie the bird to keep her egg warm while she flys off on a vacation, Horton reluctantly agrees and guess what happens. This the first appearance of Horton, who would appear again in Seuss's 1954 book, "Horton Hears a Who!" Horton the kind-hearted elephant would make a wonderful role model for all: "[h]e is very popular because of his big heart and respectful compassion, which makes him more humorous". At the end of the story, Horton's reward came for being faithful and true: "he meant what he said, And he said what he meant." ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full textured lavendar cloth over boards, red lettering debossed on the front board, title page with a small vignette of Horton and the nest in black and red, red lettering, stated "First Printing" on the copyright page, story opens with a large red initial capital, colour lithographs in red, blue and black throughout; quarto size (10 3/8" by 8 3/8"), [55] pp. With the original, unsophisticated dust jacket with the correct price of $1.50 on both flaps, illustration on the front panel in red, blue and black includes Mayzie the bird (missing in subsequent printings), red and black lettering on the spine, back panel with review blurbs for prior Dr. Seuss titles and the correct address for the publisher, summary of the story on the front flap, summary of prior title ("The King's Stilts") on the back flap. ___CONDITION: Volume near fine, the cloth clean, the red lettering strong (not faded), straight corners, the two top corners unrubbed and the two bottom corners very slightly rubbed, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; some toning to the paste-down endpapers and light sunning to the spine, else fine. The unclipped dust jacket a bit better than very good, entire, mostly clean with light overall dustiness and some toning to the top edges of the flaps, the spine somewhat sunned as is the left edge of the back panel, light overall edgewear most noticeable at the head and tail of the spine. Overall a wonderful example of the true first edition of this work. ___CITATION: Younger & Hirsch no. 31; first printing with statement on copyright page and correct prices on both flaps. In the first issue dust jacket with the bird ("Mayzie") pictured on the front panel of the jacket and the correct address for Random House on the back panel of the jacket. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
