Second Edition. 17,5 cm, xiv, 376 pp., original boards, lacks front board. This pseudonymous work purported to be the memoirs of a Whiteboy leader, but was in fact a polemical history of Ireland which argued that the English had over centuries oppressed the Irish, that oppression naturally generates resistance and insubordination, and that it was English misrule that had had its direct result in both Irish distress and agrarian violence. In the book Moore used humour and pathos of engage an audience he would not otherwise have had for this unpalatable message, and the book achieved a considerable success going through several editions in its first years. The work was particularly popular in Ireland with Millikin, the Dublin bookseller, reporting that ' the people through the country are subscribing their sixpences and shillings to buy a copy '. A clean fine copy.
