irst edition. Two volumes, complete. Very good set in original embossed cloth, neatly repaired split of about 1" on left side of spine of vol. 1. Contemporary owner's name on front free endpaper. A wide-ranging work, touching on many subjects with examples from ancient history. The Scottish editor approached the work in the spirit of the Scottish Enlightenment. In his career as a physician he was particularly concerned with materia medica (pharmaceuticals), a subject that comes up in the book. We quote the following modern synopsis [our comments are in brackets]: "This examination of the connection between the belief in miracles and religious practices in ancient times was originally written by French politician and polymath Anne-Joseph-Eusèbe Baconnière de Salverte (1771-1839) and published in 1829. In 1846, it was translated into English by a Scottish physician and writer, Anthony Todd Thomson (1778-1849), and published in two volumes. Thomson explains that Salverte's work was an important study of miracles and the power of priests [i.e., pagan priests and authorities presiding over temples and sacred sites], and he had 'performed a beneficial service in throwing open the gates of ancient sanctuaries'. However, Thomson also states that he differed from Salverte over the idea of the miraculous, and that he had expunged or heavily edited any passages relating to Christianity [not out of opposition to Christianity, rather the opposite], even changing 'miracles' in the original subtitle to 'apparent miracles'. Volume 2 discusses the role of drugs and poison [and also perfume] in magic, as well as the influence of weather on miraculous events." A well preserved set in original publisher's bindings, and very uncommon thus.

Thomson, Anthony Todd (1778-1849). Atlas of delineations of cutaneous eruptions; illustrative of the description in the practical synopsis of cutaneous diseases of Thomas Bateman, M.D. F.L.S. 8vo. vii, 112pp. 29 hand-colored engraved plates (numbered 1-17, 18a, 18b, 18-27), some with tissue guards. London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, 1829. 232 x 166 mm. Half calf gilt, marbled boards ca. 1829, light wear and rubbing. Occasional scattered foxing, but very good. Engraved bookplate of William Edmund Image (1807-1903), surgeon and well-known stamp collector. First Edition. Thomson, one of the British pioneers of dermatology, worked with Thomas Bateman at the latter's Carey Street clinic and prepared updated editions of Bateman's Practical Synopsis of Cutaneous Diseases after the author's death in 1821. "Realizing the value of Bateman's Delineations of Cutaneous Diseases [1817] in the instruction of students, which on account of expense was out of reach of most of them, [Thomson] published in 1829 an Atlas of Cutaneous Eruptions [sic] which reproduced on a smaller scale many of the illustrations from Bateman's Atlas and added a number of others" (Gray, p. 458). In 1838 Thomson was appointed professor of materia medica and therapeutics at the newly founded University of London (now University College, London), where he conducted a clinic for skin diseases at University College Hospital, the first clinic of its kind to be established at a teaching hospital. Gray, "Dermatologists at University College Hospital," British Journal of Dermatology 75 (1963): 457-464. .
