2 folding engraved maps and two folding engraved views. First Edition. 8vo. [10] ff., 246 pp. 19th century binding (by C. Kalthoeber, London), calf, tooled in gilt & blind, sensitively rebacked, minor bumping to corners otherwise very good, paper clean and clear. London: for Joseph Smith, Thoresby began work on his great history of Leeds at the beginning of the 1690?s. He expanded substantially his father?s collection of coins and medals, and his expertise on northern Roman remains was one of his qualifications for Fellowship of the Royal Society. His considerable reputation as an antiquary and topographer had been justified by the publication of his earlier work on the topography of Leeds, and in particular the account of his museum, which had wider appeal than the more local interest of his topographical history of Leeds. The present work is different though also a product of Thoresby?s long period of historical study, and though he never published his work on the history of Leeds in all periods (bar the Roman) the part of his immense research concerning the church in Leeds was published as the present work. Thus this work is quite distinct and a companion to his more famous Ducatus Leodiensis of 1715. Provenance: armorial bookplate of Charles W. G. Howard (1814-1879), who was the ninth child of George Howard, 6th Earl of Carlisle (1773-1848). Bookplate also bears an ornate plaque that reads ?The gift of the Rt. Hon. Sir David Dundas of Ochtertyne? Dundas (1799-1877) was Liberal M.P. for Sutherland 1840-52 and 1861-67, who lived for a while at Ochtertyre, a mansion in Kincardine parish, Perthshire. ESTC T98271.
