The second edition of John Timbs' work on the abbeys, castles, and ancient halls of England and Wales, edited and enlarged by Alexander Gunn. County by county, Timbs enumerates the histories and folklore associated with the abbeys and castles found across England and Wales. Whilst volume I focuses on the South, volumes two and three concentrate on the midlands and the north respectively. Prior owner's ink inscription to the title page of all three volumes, 'Downes. 30.9.00' With a page of publisher's adverts to the rear of volume I. With four and six pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of volumes II and III respectively. In the publisher's original green cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, more so to the joints. Bumped to the head and tail of the spine, with a little loss of cloth to both across all three volumes. The cloth is fraying slightly to the head of volume II. Front hinge starting but firm to volume I, and both front and rear hinges are starting but firm in volume II. Internally, generally firmly bound, although the frontispiece to volume I is disbound but present. Pages are lightly age - toned but clean throughout. Very Good. book.
