8vo, 4 parts in 1 vol., pp. viii, 220 + folding tables; viii, 61, [1]; 185, [1]; 85, [1]; + Appendix 77, [1]; a clean crisp copy in contemporary half calf with marbled sides, skilfully rebacked.First edition of Tooke's first work, discussing the influence of climatic conditions and changing demand on agricultural prices. 'During the three years which followed the Resumption Act of 1819 prices of nearly all commodities decreased, and the opinion that the fall in prices was the result of the return to cash payments gained support. Tooke's efforts during his early years as an active economist were devoted to the defence of the resumption and the refutation of the claims that it was responsible for the decline in prices and associated crises' (ODNB). Tooke was one of the earliest supporters of the free-trade movement and in support of these principles, he, along with Ricardo, Malthus, James Mill, and others founded the Political Economy Club in April 1821.Goldsmiths 23825; Kress C.31163; not in Einaudi. Erstausgabe
First edition of Tooke's first book, occasioned by the price instability throughout the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars and their aftermath. "The work of 1823, Thoughts and Details on the High and Low Prices of the Last Thirty Years, provided the basis for Tooke's monetary thought until and including the publication in 1838 of the first two volumes of his massive treatise The History of Prices" (Arnon, Thomas Tooke: Pioneer of Monetary Theory, p. 58). It was part of the broader corpus of literature which Tooke published from 1823 to 1838, which together comprised "a systematic attempt to collect and analyse as much historical material and statistical information as possible, connected with price changes in England from 1793 onwards: a thorough observation of facts, aimed at understanding the determinants of fluctuations in the domestic price level" (New Palgrave, IV, p. 657). Einaudi 5659; Goldsmiths' 23825; Kress C1163. Two volumes bound in 1, octavo (208 x 123 mm). Twentieth-century brown buckram, spine lettered in gilt on read leather label. Folding printed table in vol. I. Bound without half-title in vol. II. Label somewhat rubbed, title leaf a little browned. A very good copy.
